Hello, I just wanted to know if anyone else has been in the same situation. My GFR has been acting a little strange. Back in February for the first time in my life my gfr was 52, and my a1c was 8.7. Three months later the gfr was 74 and my a1c was 5.7. Last month my gfr dipped back to 66, but my a1c declined a bit to 5.4. All of the time my blood and urine showed nothing abnormal, everything else was fine except for my testosterone levels which have always been low. My doctor found out that I do have multiple kidney stones ( about 6 or 7 ) and one is quite large at 12mm. I have a history of kidney stones so he wasn't surprised. When we discussed my gfr he told us "not to worry about it ". He said at my age, 67 and my history of kidney stones, that my gfr was normal for my age. He is going to laser out my kidney stones which he has done before. Oh yeah, I have one slightly deformed kidney from birth. I have read that kidney stones can affect your gfr but I don't really know how much. My question is, should I believe my doctor and not worry about it, and has anyone else had a similar experience? I would appreciate your input. Thank you

Gfr goes up and down
Hello planetechy
,
To answer your question please trust and believe your doctor. He is taking positive steps to deal with the kidney stones which has been successful for you in the past. As you are aware GFR measurements do go up and down and yours appear to be within the normal limits expected as is your a1c score.
Be kind to yourself; you are doing well. Our members will share their experience and wisdom with you.

Thank you for your response. I have been having trouble dealing with this issue for a while. My Doctor texted me last night and said that by definition I don't have CKD, but my mind keeps telling me different. Is Gfr the only criteria for determining CKD? From what I have been reading it seems like there's more to it than just your GFR. Do you know where I can find out more reliable information. There is so much information out there on the web it's hard to find what is true and what is speculative. Thank you again
I am not experienced like many people on here and can only tell you my experience. After an evening spent in the A&E dept of my local hospital with a suspected cardiac episode, my eGFR was reported back to my GP as being 53 and follow up bloods were suggested.
These came back at eGFR of 61 and my previous results held at the surgery were 74. I am older than you at 72 but my GP refuses to label me as having CKD and says that these figures are completely normal for my age depending on the circumstances at the time. The low result was after a five hour wait on a hot evening.
She refused to discuss creatinine etc and said that I shouldn’t concern myself but just make sure that I drink “enough”.
No follow up arranged so I have pretty much stopped worrying and just take care without being obsessive. Good Luck.
