Got my gfr reading at 55, though my urine sample was ok and my ultrasound didn’t show any abnormalities. I am aged 50 but don’t know what exactly is going on.
My current doctor GP is retiring in a month and she is the one flagging this up, her replacement is saying that I don’t have anything to worry about.
Can anyone give me some advice please?

Welcome to our community! Looking at your blood test results your eGFR (Estimate Glomerular Filtration Rate) may possibly indicate early-stage 3a CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease) with a mild to moderate loss of renal function. However, eGFR can't be the only indicator of developing CKD, and other contributing factors need to be considered. eGFR is an estimate of how well your kidneys are filtering and is affected by taking in factors such as age, sex, and other information. It seems that you have a good GP and hopefully you will find another one in the practice, who can monitor your kidney function regularly. I suggest that if you have any concerns that you have a chat with him/her.
I have the same thing going on with me. Everything else is normal, my urine, blood sugar, and all other blood tests are perfectly normal. But my GFR is bouncing around like a ping pong ball and my doctor is just as confused. I am having a ultrasound day on the 16th of this month and I do have a history of kidney stones, and I found out that they can affect your GFR. But, please let me know if you find out what is causing your problems.
Exactly the same boat. I am 47. Uktraso7nd shows both kidneys are normal. Blood work is fine with the exception of EGFR and Creatinine. eGFr has bounced around between 49 and 58 since last September.
No history of kidney stones or diabetes or high blood pressure for me.
I am very similar...my eGR was 57 in March...other kidney tests including creatinine, kidney ultrasound, potassium, phosphorus, sodium, and urinalysis were normal. On my 24-hour urine the only out of range was the creatinine clearance which was low. But drs seem to think it's related to aging. I just cut out salt, eat a low protein diet and walk 30 minutes each day and was able to get my eGFR up in the 60s and creatinine down to.87. I see the kidney doctor this Thursday.
I hope everything works out well for you...let us know.
I just had some routine blood work done last March and that's when I noticed the eGFR was below the normal range (57) So I was very concerned and went to see a nephrologist who did order the 24-hour urine and renal panel as well as PCR and kidney ultrasound (which was normal) I noticed on these results I had a low creatinine clearance on my 24-hour urine...but my eGFR has gone up in the 60s (now in normal range according to lab values) and my creatinine went down from.96 to.87 after I cut out many supplements (as per the dr's orders) and cut back on protein and sodium as well as started walking briskly for 30 minutes most days. But I am still concerned about the low creatinine clearance. I have an appointment with the nephrologist again this Thursday to follow up my results. This all has me a nervous wreck after reading incessantly online about chronic kidney disease!!! I am 70 years old so I'm hoping it's just part of the normal aging process and nothing more serious!
Well I just say this. I wish to live to be your age. I am however, 37 years old and have concerns about my situation. I have been going for routine blood works for the past 3 or so years and what I've noticed as a pattern that my egfr fluctuates and my creatinine fluctuates as well. I went to see a kidney specialist 3 years ago and he said everything looked fine. Only thing was that my kidneys were smaller than the average size. So today I seen him again and he said everything was fine and that it wasnt a significant enough raise or drop in my creatinine level to raise any concerns. He also said that he looks at the other things along with the egfr and creatine to help him determine if it's any cause for concern like blood pressure, blood in urine, and protein in urine which he said those were all fine. So my scare and concern is wondering how can my egfr and creatine fluctuate up and down so much and it not be a problem in their eyes.
Well he's probably right...hopefully you will be just fine with nothing seriously wrong. I've read that it happens in many people with no explanation. Bless you!
Exact same with me. I was just crying today about it because I'm so torn between wanting to find out more and find out why because I'm thinking maybe the kidney doctor isnt concerned enough but then I'm like I need to put my trust in God first.
I wish you the best as well. Hey like I said, you're already doing better than me. I can't wait to say I'm 70 years old 😊
Sweetie, I feel you are going to be just fine.. I tell you what I tell myself...have faith in God...don't lean on your understanding or feelings, or try to figure things out...trust in the Lord with all your heart and He will direct, guide and protect you!
I know EXACTLY how it feels to be so afraid and worried that you cannot even function properly and it is so mentally draining - I'm a pro at it! But I'm not proud of that at all! I'm learning to trust the Lord Jesus and just like many times before, He will get me through this...to God be the glory! And I believe He will do the same for you. I don't know what your belief is but I am a believer in the Lord Jesus and He is ever faithful. He had never ever let me down or failed me. I hope you feel a little encouraged...try not to stress over it (I know that's easier said than done!) but give all your worries and fears to God — He loves you dearly and will carry you and your burdens.
If you'd like to tell me your name I'll say a prayer for you tonight. God bless you, dear one. Everything will be okay 😊
"And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them." (Romans 8:28)
I truly appreciate your kind words. Yes I am God's child and believe that Jesus Christ is Lord. I pray and I know that God can do the impossible. I just have to believe and trust. I've always worried about my health, being a mother of two. And I've been trying my best to keep on keeping on and put my trust in God. However the worries and fears some times get the best of me. But I will always look to God through this. And you are so right about everything you have said. My name is Juanita. I will pray for you as well as I have always said, prayer still works, but I have to believe it and cast my cares to God.
Many thanks for all your comments. Certainly I have more questions to ask my GP. For this that have changed their diet, are you now basically vegetarian?
Yes! Don’t believe a word they say when they tell you that you don’t have anything to worry about!! Because you do!! Especially since there’s nothing that a nephrologist will help you with! That is until you get to end stage kidney disease. Then they can tell you how to have dialysis. I wish they would just tell patients up front that there’s nothing they can do to help you!!😡
Was at the GP today and basically she confirmed nothing wrong with urine sample, all looking ok, no blood or protein in the sample. My ultrasound showed nothing, no stones, no sign of damage to my kidneys or gallbladder. But yet, egfr Reading was 55/56 and my creatine level was 101.
She is going to place a blood pressure monitor on me for a period of time, though my readings at home were ok, though at the top end of the range. To go back in a month to get another blood test before she will confirm if I have CKD or not. But feeling slightly overwhelmed by it all.
