Hereditary CKD?

Diagnosed with CKD Stage 3B, there was no clearcut reason other than mild B/P problems. On April 13th, my mother passed away and in going through her paperwork, I found death certificates in her sister, and her father, my aunt and grandfather. The cause of death listed in both was kidney disease/failure. I didn't know kidney disease other than polycystic was hereditary, but now I wonder? I'm taking these to my nephrologist at my next visit.

Hi Stpdtagoo

I was diagnosed with Stage 3a CKD almost 7 years ago. Once over the initial shock, which took me at least 6 months, I decided to look through my families death certificates. There was no history of CKD in my family but my fathers certificate showed he died of chronic renal failure as well as angina. I too have wondered if maybe I had inherited CKD from my father.

Both my relatives died of renal failure as a result of CKD. There would have to be some connection I would think.

Are you having tests to rule out a genetic cause? I'm sure I read that there is more that one cause of genetic ckd but there's so much mis-info out there is hard to know what to believe

Hi, it sure sounds like there is some genetic link. Even if not directly, maybe conditions that can lead to CKD. I have read both sides, yes and no. Like me, I have higher cholesterol. I have done so many things to lower it, but my doctor says it all comes back to genetics. Great luck!!

In reply to everyone interested in possible genetic reasons for their 'kidney' situation, I was told that this is quite probable - my brother also has stage 3 CKD and our late mother had very high blood pressure and angina. We are both in our 70's and the CKD is also age-related. Sally10355, I have had the same experience as you regarding the high cholesterol, and have been prescribed a statin - Atorvastatin 20mg - to be taken once a day. It is very interesting that although my brother has always been slim and underweight (unlike me), he has inherited exactly the same health problems as me - only one 'good' kidney probably from birth, hypertension and high cholesterol. I am resolved to do the best I can with eating a kidney-friendly diet, concentrating on cutting down as much as I can on potassium (my main problem), but do not beat myself up about it! - Curleytop1.
