Ramipril blood pressure med : Hi everyone... - Early CKD Support
Ramipril blood pressure med
I would have thought if he suspected Ramipril as the culprit for your reduced kidney function, he would have changed the medication there and then. Whereas Ramipril is often considered to be a good drug for the kidneys , that is not so for everyone, especially those who have narrowed arteries to the kidneys.
Thankz for your response but he told me today that it's one of its side effects I'm very worried have to go back in 4 weeks to see
True. I agree Celtic.
Lisinopril is a high BP medication in the same family which widely prescribed to diabetics to protect the kidneys and kidney patients both as a protective device and to reduce protein spilling.
Jennifer, It is not for everyone. When in doubt, check it with your GP and discuss it with your nephrologist.
I was on Ramipril 2.5 mg for about 3 months and during the time I was on it my kidney function declined 1% every 5 weeks. I saw my consultant who said that it can cause a decline in some people so she took me off of it right away. That was two weeks ago and I have my next blood test this coming Friday so I hope it has picked up a bit. I certainly feel better after coming off of it.
I just read a interesting study on Pycnogenol ( pine bark) from 2011 .although it was published by distributor.
I have been on ramipril many years for my b.p. and can honestly say it has not affected my eGFR. However I did have to stop taking a tablet to reduce oedema in my legs because it had and effect on my kidneys and reduced the function from 28 to 18. I also had to stop my metformin which I was taking for type2 diabetes. I might add that my eGFR has now improved to 37 (level 3b) as compared to level 4 previously,
I am not sure how helpful this info is for you but try not to get too upset. Some people go down to level 3 anyway and never go futher down for the rest of their lives.!
Thankz for ur reply but the dr said it gets the creatine high in some ppl l guess I'm one of then but I'm really concern I'm not gonna take it anymore
The increase in the creatinine is what my doctor said to me can happen when people take Ramipril and as creatinine is used to estimate kidney function then this is giving the impression of a reduced eGFR. I really hope this is the case with me. I have my next blood test this Friday and have been off Ramipril for the last three weeks so I will report back once I get my results.
not a bad idea to see another doc for second opinion

Any of the ACE drugs can initially cause a dip but in the long term it can come back up. It initially drops as it lowers your bp, so the flow going through your kidneys drops. However from about four plus weeks later the drug may help the overall quality of the fine vessels in not just the kidney but other areas of the body such as in your retinas. If the drop doesn’t stop then these aren’t for you. This is why you’ve been asked to come back later to see which direction your gfr is heading.
If you can tolerate these drugs they are worth sticking with as that vessel/capillary improvement is also a benefit in slowing not just the ckd but diabetes also.
I started ramipril 2.5 about five days ago. So far I have had the blurred vision and slightly upset stomach. From how I feel I can tell my gfr is lowered but if I can stick this out and adjust to it then it will be a benefit in the longer term
Good luck and hope your gfr settles
