I am 23 years old and have been suffering with high blood pressure since having my daughters. Recently i have been sent for a ultrasound which shown my right kidney is scarred. I have been referred to a nephrologist which have said my kidneys are functioning at 40%. I have been given different bp medication and told to go back in 2 weeks to see if there is any improvement if not will need a kidney biopsy. I was told to sign a consent form for biopsy at my first appointment with nephrologist. I am really worried about the biopsy as nothing ends up being straight-forward with anything i ever had done. Is it wise to refuse the biopsy or is there any other treatment? Thankyou in advance.

Hi Paige
A biopsy unfortunately is the best way to get a clear diagnosis . It is an uncomfortable , but fairly straightforward procedure. It's a while since I last had one, but I imagine things haven't changed much.
You will be awake, on your front. a large amount of lignocaine will be injected into one area of skin above a kidney. A long needle which you won't see, will be inserted. You will feel a sensation like a staple gun as samples of tissue are taken . After, you have to lie flat on bed rest for several hours to prevent any bleeding from the kidney. That's it really. I know what you mean about things never being straightforward , I have a similar record!
Good luck. x
