I am so sorry you have developed Diabetes due to lithium. To be honest, I didn’t know about this side effect of lithium. However, I am all too aware that lithium causes CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease). I stopped the medication when I knew what had happened to me. I didn’t consult the doctor.
It is a medication that is known to cause CKD and I am appalled that it is still being used.
Take care of yourself and I wish you the best health in the future.
Unfortunately prescribed medication can cause VERY unwanted side effects. I do hope in the future the whole of a patients well-being is considered.
Thanks very much for your kind reply. Yes, I was told that I had CKD level 3 at one point which I'm glad to say has improved due to being off lithium. I did have a really bad kidney infection once when I was in a psychiatric hospital with extra meds. I'd been prescribed at one point. They had to ask a general doctor to assess me because they thought I might have to be moved to another part of the hospital to be treated on a general ward as I was that unwell. So, yes psych. meds. can really muck up your body.
The nephrogenic diabetes insipidus isn't actually diabetes in itself . I was drinking up to 7 litres a day cause of the lithium and the kidneys can't concentrate the urine and you just drink , pee , drink pee but yeah I have to watch what meds I take due to damage to the kidneys. Defo can't take ibuprofen.
I am.glad that you are off lithium now ,are you taking anything else I was put on sodium valproate instead which also has loads of side effects and the weight just piled on .
I have managed to reduce the dosage to 500mg in the morning which isn't a therapeutic range but it seems to work for me . And I have now have made a connection with my sporadic moods being down to the fact that my thyroid meds. keep being changed.
But, that's another story.
Hope you're managing to keep well off the lithium.
