Like any non-diabetic, a well controlled diabetic without complication, can safely go for walk. One should walk minimum 30 minutes per day, minimum 4-5 days per week. It is advisable to go for regular & brisk walk. Avoid walking with full stomach. For safe and enjoyable walk, wear well fitted, comfortable shoes.
Before initiating a walking program, one should see doctor for a physical examination. The checkup will help ensure that the exercise program will not increase the risk for diabetes complication e.g. heart, feet.
It is important to note that before initiating walking program, diabetes should be well under control (Blood Glucose between 100 and 150 mg/dl). If BG is high before exercise, walking can make it go even higher. It is best to avoid walking if fasting BG levels are >250 mg/dl and ketosis is present, and use caution if glucose levels are >300 mg/dl and no ketosis is present.
