Hello all, hope everyone is staying safe. Recently my fasting sugar levels and post meal have been going up for no reason I can attribute to.
Quick background: I'm 55, male, was diagnosed with Type 2 in 2011 in Singapore (been here since 94). I was given Metformin 500mg and Dimicron XR60 at that time. When I went back to India a few years ago same meds continued. Then I came back to Singapore with same medicine. In 2018 went to Bangalore doc changed medicine to diapride 500 mg and jalra50/500. I'm back in Sg now and last month the doc changed to Glipzide and Diabetmin500. (Also been taking 10mg statin as and when).
All the while the levels have been pretty reasonable in the acceptable range under 7.5 fasting and under 10 post meals. But recently the levels are shooting up, even before the latest Singapore medicine change happened. Anyone have any idea what could be the reason?
I walk minimum 3 km every day, yoga, watching my diet.
Thanks a lot!

My understanding is that Singapore has excellent medical service!
Different medication react differently to different people.
Please go back to see a specialist full blood test and medication with correct dosage.
What is your life style like?, weight, waist, height, BP, HbA1c level and blood cholesterol lipids?
You can control type by using food as medicine. Eating the correct food in small quantities till blood numbers are controlled. Have evening meal before 7 PM, have breakfast after 9 AM.
Simple lunch fresh fruits and green salads. The way fruits are sold cleaned and ready to eat.
Out door exercise facilities in the parks are excellent and free. I used to go for morning walk with my brother before breakfast, he lived in the west coast area.
You can control your blood numbers with in 6 months.
Thanks a lot Sandy, I'll try that. As a matter of fact, couple of years ago I was doing low carb diet which worked wonders, my post meal was 5.5 like that. I'll go back to that. My weight is between 65 and 67kg, height 5.7. Was it is 34 I think. Last HbA1C was 7.5 or less, lipids were normal. Triglycerides needed some work I think. Will go for a check up again as the one I did last month didn't include HbA1C! btw, does the OneTouch meter ever give inaccurate readings? Could the strips be old? Does it happen? Thanks again, stay safe.
Home testing is a guide line. Proper lab testing is accurate but at times lab can make mistake!!
At my age of 74, my height is 5 ft 6 inches and weigh 77 kg. I started my life style change few years ago, wrote A 4 page to NHS, UK. As I age HbA1c is going up, so far managing without any medication, do annual foot and eye check, HbA1c every 6 months.
I am afraid you need to speak to a specialist to do full blood check.
Hi sandybrown, I went to the doc yesterday to clear my doubts, and while waiting for my turn, it struck me that I have probably misunderstood the dosage, and I was right. I was supposed to take Glucaphage 1000mg with the diabetmin 500mg, and I have not been taking that! Since they are both metformin family, I thought one was enough, till I realised the name on the box was different now started taking both diabetmin 500 and glucophage1000mg! Thanks!
I eat small quantity of food, lot of veg, porridge for breakfast, open sandwich for lunch and small quantity of food for dinner. Breakfast 9 AM, lunch 12 or 1 PM always eventing meal before 7PM home cooked from fresh food. 14 hours between evening meal and breakfast can help. Go for walk in the morning for one hour. Keep away from hidden and free sugary food and drinks, this can be difficult.
Drink lots of tea, black coffee three times a day. Lots of cold water.
"Metformin (generic name) Glucaphage, Diabetmin (brand names) is used alone or with other medications, including insulin, to treat type 2 diabetes (condition in which the body does not use insulin normally and, therefore, cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood). Metformin is in a class of drugs called biguanides. Metformin helps to control the amount of glucose (sugar) in your blood. It decreases the amount of glucose you absorb from your food and the amount of glucose made by your liver. Metformin also increases your body's response to insulin, a natural substance that controls the amount of glucose in the blood."(2)
"Gliclazide, sold under the brand name Diamicron among others, is an anti-diabetic medication used to treat diabetes mellitus type 2. It is used when dietary changes, exercise, and weight loss are not enough. It is taken by mouth."(3)
Glimepiride (generic name) Diapride (brand name) is used along with diet and exercise, and sometimes with other medications, to treat type 2 diabetes (condition in which the body does not use insulin normally and, therefore, cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood). Glimepiride lowers blood sugar by causing the pancreas to produce insulin (a natural substance that is needed to break down sugar in the body) and helping the body use insulin efficiently. This medication will only help lower blood sugar in people whose bodies produce insulin naturally.
Vildagliptin 50 mg/metformin 500 mg (generic name) Jalra (brand name) , sold under the brand name Eucreas among others, is a fixed-dose combination anti-diabetic medication for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
Glipizide is used along with diet and exercise, and sometimes with other medications, to treat type 2 diabetes (condition in which the body does not use insulin normally and, therefore, cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood). Glipizide is in a class of medications called sulfonylureas. Glipizide lowers blood sugar by causing the pancreas to produce insulin (a natural substance that is needed to break down sugar in the body) and helping the body use insulin efficiently. This medication will only help lower blood sugar in people whose bodies produce insulin naturally.
Fasting blood sugar (FBS) should be less than 100 mg/dL (5.5 mmol/L) and postprandial blood sugar (PPBS) should be less than 140 mg/dL (7.7 mmol/L)
I usually take 12 units of insulin in the morning and another 12 units in the evening. Now I taking fast from 6:00 pm to 8:00 am (14 hours) and my insulin dosage reduced to 12 units in the morning and not taking insulin in the evening. Now my FBS is 100 mg (5.5 mmol/L).
My son aged 51 years (diabetic) has completely avoided rice and wheat in the diet. His FBS and PPBS level are always below 100 mg/dL (5.5 mmol/L). He takes fast 18 hours daily and walks 4 miles in the morning in an hilly region in California.
Thanks a lot for the detailed info and the break down of generic name and brand name, very useful, appreciate it. I went to the doc yesterday to clear my doubts, and while waiting for my turn, it struck me that I have probably misunderstood the dosage, and I was right. I was supposed to take Glucaphage 1000mg with the diabetmin 500mg, and I have not been taking that! Since they are both metformin family, I thought one was enough, till I realised the name on the box was different. Now it should be ok, I take rice once in a while, and chapati fairly often. IS chapati no good? Even low GI ones? Thanks again.
EDIT to previous post: I went to the doc yesterday to clear my doubts, and while waiting for my turn, it struck me that I have probably misunderstood the dosage, and I was right. I was supposed to take Glucaphage 1000mg with the diabetmin 500mg, and I have not been taking that! Dear Guru,First I congratulate you to be Inthis group. Regarding the Metformin I do not have much experience.I started my diabetic medicine way back in2007 and the medicine was gliclazide 30mg.Gradually it increased to 60 and I want to back to 30 only on food.I am not a doctor and I shall not comment on medicine. I am a earth scientist.I got educated in this forum and now on no medine.I have switched my diet from wheat to positive millet.I have left vegetable oil based food as well as milk and milk product. If you like try once.you may require less medicine. Thanks once again. All the best.
Dear Guru Sahab,My regards for you. Thanks for your reply on my posting. But I am off the medicine from 1st December.20.Now I am on observing the behaviour of this on my suger level.Give me at least 2 months for conclusion.please share your email so that I can share my diet plan i.e diabetic reversal.I can share in public forum also .No problem. But my request is to remind in.
I am also diabetic ( type 2) since year 2000.I realised that unless you do not control intake of carbohydrates ( roti & rice) , no medicine can help you.
U should reduce intake of carbohydrates and increase the intake of vegetables and fruits , as much as possible.
By diet control, excerise , yoga or medicine cannot help.
You are absolutely correct. I believe that if take food as your medicine then alright. But if not then medicine will be your food. Only solution is to take limited comp carb avoiding rice, suger and high GI foods.
