I met a 70 year old diabetic whose facial skin is a healthy 50! He gorges on sugary drinks and foods rich in carbohydrates. He took to Insulin shots at first indication of rising glucose levels about twenty years ago. He is full of cheer and energy.

There is no such thing as good or bad about it.We have to see whether it is appropriate or not, given the circumstances. In the present instance, the doctor seems to have taken a valid decision, considering the adventurous spirit of the person. But,consuming lots of carbohydrates and then trying to compensate with medicines or insulin is not wise,if you ask me.
