Hello sanaya-12345: a warm welcome you to this forum. Being diabetic and pregnant is really critical. You can control your BSL with proper and strict diet with regular exercise. This may be difficult when you are pregnant. Unfortunately, your current BSL are quite high even though you are currently on glycomet sr twice daily. Therefore, I suggest you to follow your doctor's instructions for the safety of yourself and your unborn child throughout the pregnancy. Is there any particular reason that you do not want to use the insulin? As I know insulin is totally safe for unborn baby. Uncontrolled BSL during pregnancy will seriously harm your unborn child. Please consider carefully.
Are you type 1, type 2 or LADA (1.5)? If you're type 1 and you are insulin dependant, the insulin has to be used. Please talk with your doctor. Being pregnant and having diabetes is very hard on the body. Also, please let us know what the doctor says. We'll be here.
Hi Sanaya-12345 First you check Carbohydrate content in your diet minimize it with protein and good fat also break you foods with more no instead of taking a large meal and read the post in this forum posted by Mr. Anup you will be able to control it if you Are Type 2,but is case of Type -1 you have to continue insulin but following low carbohydrate diet will minimize you insulin requirement. wish you good health.

It's really tricky to control bs during pregnancy. She is a case of diabetes getting pregnant.
If she is type 1 insulin and metformin are the drugs.
If type 2 there are many options now for oral antidiabetic medicines. The principles / logic of the treatment are
1) the drug should not cross placenta and act on fetus.
2) hypoglycemia bs <60 can kill the fetus in utero.
3) hyperglycemia is also dangerous because the glucose crosses placenta and results in very big baby / fetal macrosomia and making the labour / delivery difficult . Also hyperglycemia during early weeks increases the incidence of fetal malformations.
Further the fetal hyperglycemia causes beta cell hypertrophy and sudden cessation of maternal glucose delivery at birth causes severe neonatal hypoglycemia causing neonatal death.
Also oral drugs may not be able to control bs during any kind of stress like infection and labour / fetal delivery. So insulin has to be used.
So it would be better to control bs in unison of a gynae and endo.
Take care and wish you all the best @sanaya12345
Yes. Diet management taking care of increased nutritional demands should be observed.
I am glad to see many advice and support for Sanaya; hopefully she would read these discussions and make the right decision for her pregnancy. I totally agree with you guys for Sanaya to avoid all sorts of herbs even though they may be beneficial as anti-hyperglycemia. I do believe all herbs do have side effects for long term use or overuse which most likely to warn publicly not to be used during pregnancy for the safety of both mother and unborn baby.
I mentioned earlier in my previous post that Sanaya should follow her doctors both Gynae and Endo because I had my own experience with gestational diabetes during 3rd trimester of my pregnancy for one of my children. I was not diabetes at that time but this disease has run through my family. I was advised to control BSL with low carbs diet and a regular exercise. After two weeks later, the doctor was not happy with my BSL records so he prescribed me with some insulin injections 3 times daily. I was required to have closed consultation with the medical teams and midwife to ensure things are going well. I carried on the recommended diet from dietitian and also exercising regularly. I walked everyday and also joined the yoga class for pregnancy. I was scheduled to have labor a week earlier than my due date to avoid having too large baby however my baby was born few days before the induction. She had very low BSL after birth about 2.0 mmol/L and my own BSL was back to normal level. My baby's BSL went up to a safe range after having some formula milk as my breast-milk was not available after birth. That's an extraordinarily experience I had.
Sanaya, please do not worry too much as stress can cause more troubles. Be educate, be safe and with the helps of the medical team as well as support from your family, I am sure that everything will go well with your pregnancy. Best of luck

Thanks for sharing your personal experience. All what you said is very true. But she is not gestational D. She is a D getting pregnant. So she requires more care and attention than a patient having GDM.
Based on her post I am aware that she has been diabetic and on antidiabetic drug. My personal experience using insulin during pregnancy may give her some information and relief to give it a go in following her doctor's advice. I know that gestational D and normal D (1 or 2) are different in terms of conditions and complications but the treatment more likely to use insulin as controlling BSL while pregnant is very hard.

You have really good knowledge about the D with pregnancy. Previously it's routine practice to use insulin in such condition but nowadays with availability of better drugs and improvement in the knowledge and availability of gazets like dexcom it's become easy to manage D.
Being diabetic during pregnancy is common to many. It is a temporary thiing. It will disappear once the baby is delivered. Follow the doctors advice. Do not worry about this. Have happy time and a safe delivery.
Plz follow advice given by your doctor... Elevated sugar during pregnancy is very common...don't worry much about the same..said problem will get resolved once baby is delivered...
Plz do not follow any herbs (though I have strong faith on herbs) since pregnancy is very crucial stage of life...go for proved and trusted procedure only....
Strictly follow advice given by your doctor...and forget worrying about elevated sugar...
In this forum suramo may be able to guide you further.
May God bless you....

Thanks but she is a diabetic getting pregnant. Her pregnancy is categorized as "high risk ". I agree. She should stay away from herbs.
Post delivery management of both neonate and mother is very crucial because of tremendous hormonal changes in both - the mother and the neonate.
More frequent visits to doctors and sonological exams become mandatory in such patients.
Hello Sanaya-12345,
Controlling BS levels is very important if you have gestational diabetes. Else, it affects the baby's weight and may lead to other complications. My wife was in a similar situation while she was pregnant with our son. she was able to control her BS levels by eating a number of times per day. She used to break her servings into no more than 100 calories.
Hope this helps.
Uncontrolled bs during pregnancy is dangerous. Insulin will do no harm, it is safe. Follow your doctor's advice.
If you continue to be diabetic after delivery, only then think of alternate therapies.
Hi, I have lowered my blood sugar significant successfully using these things:
1. Apple cider vinegar (works for high carb meals and high fat meals)
2. Gentle digest, its my cat's supplement contains chicory root (for high fat meals)
3. Atkins bar with any meal (works for high carb and high fat meals) or Atkins meals
4. 1-2 drops NOW Peppermint Oil (works for high carb and high fat meals)
5. Celery (works for high carb and high fat meals) even with cream cheese on it!
6. Fresh strawberries sliced, even if I used a little bit of sugar
7. 2-3 Celery stalks, with or without cream cheese
8. Source Naturals Holy Basil for high cortisol levels raising blood sugar. (For me this is only at night, so I take it at night for through the night into combat the dawn effect.) You will know if you have high cortisol at night if after dinner you are tired but later your energy returns so may a problem going to sleep at night. Also, this Holy Basil calms me and helps me sleep.
9. And if you like milkshakes... an Atkins vanilla shake, blended with about 12 strawberries and 1 pkt Stevia (or splenda if you prefer) will lower blood sugar at any time of day or night and combat the dawn effect as well. (works for high carb meals and high fat meals). And, this tastes as good or better than a McDonald's shake and is just as thick, plus works fantastic.
Ps. Using the above I no longer take any prescription medicines. My sugar came down from 296 to 1/2 of that - or better.
I did not change my diet, loose weight or exercise either.
All of these are fairly inexpensive and they work fantastic, so experiment to see what works best for you - except I agree you should avoid herbs while pregnant (so no holy basil).
No supplements needed and cheap, i suggest you try food pairing. Example, late last night I ate 2 bagels with tons of butter. My blood sugar spiked to 229. Before bed, I ate a very sweet red delicious apple. My blood sugar dropped to 111 by morning. I know from experience if I had eaten the 2 things together, at the same time, my blood sugar would have been dramatically lower that night.
My sister eats 2 celery stalks to food pair with high carb or high fat meals, (with or without cream cheese, doesn't matter). She's seen her blood sugar drop 80 pts down to normal in 1 hr.
Hi.I think u shud strictly live under the supervision of Gynec Doc. B'coz any experiment will harm to yr baby. U can also consult diabetes specialist doctor and consult diatecian. Best of Luck.
Thanks all for ur precious comments I m type 2 diabetic and I can't inject insulin many times thats my problem now it's 227 after 2 hrs having food...I m taking smaller portion more time to have my bs down I m trying best...let's see...I m having 30 min walk in morning also is it ok because I dnt know which exercise should be done in early pregnancy..I m still on glycomet sr 500.. 2 times
Hello Sanaya & how are you? How nice to see your reply. Sorry to know that you are still dealing with elevated BSL. You are exactly right that at the early stage of pregnancy you cannot do much exercise. Please carry on with a short morning walk and perhaps later on you would try another shot walk after dinner if it's applicable. Ideally wait about 20 - 30 minutes after eating your meals before walking. Eating small meals is a good idea and please ensure to eat a balanced diet that suits your pregnancy. I was wondering why you mentioned that you cannot inject the insulin. You are still on the same medication with same dosage but this seems not helping you to lower blood sugar. Have you recently discussed this issue with you doctor? If not, please do as soon as possible as it's very crucial for you and your unborn child. I know it is a hard thing to deal with but I am sure you can do this with the helps from medical team.
