Hi, I had undergone cataract on both eyes last year . The BG should be brought under control , with insulin if necessary , before the surgery .The surgeon will require a clearance from your diabetologist to proceed with surgery Be cautious about corticosteroid eye drops that may be prescribed for use after the surgery .This could raise the BG for some people .If BG is not controlled , the recovery time will be longer or it may lead to complications

Thanks Ram for the advice on corticosteroid eye drops . I just checked prescription and she has been asked to take prednisolone acetate which belongs to same category. Should I ask for a non steroidal alternative. She has also been prescribed nevanac which is non steroidal.

cataract surgery has advanced very much in last few years.so slight variations in your blood sugar level is not going to make any difference in the out come. so please go ahead with your plans provided your eye surgeon is ready to operate.

Some eye specialists feel that corticosteroid administered as eye drop is mild and it does not have great effect on BG .Pl check with your diabetologist . It is not that every one will respond to this drug in the same way.Never the less ,corticosteroid is required for healing immediately after cataract surgery . 160/140 - Is it fbg or ppbg ?

I tend to agree with ram_latha that caution is necessary as ,though corticosteroid ointment are essential post cataract surgery to avoid any complication,it generally interfere with blood sugar control,hence some rise in blood sugar levels. Still ,that does not affect the outcome,unless there is some pre existing glaucoma or any other ocular problem.

she is on insulin 90 units a day. Still glucose is not completely under control. Today we did a lab test and sugar is 178(fasting) and 140 (PP). Last week it was 120/130. Doc has said anything under 200 is fine. Im just worried abt fluctuations

@akatti,

At what time does your mother wake up & what time is the Fasting sugar measured ?

Take a look at below, if you have not seen it already :

My mother underwent the surgery yesterday and it went fine. Also I checked with her physician and eye surgeon, and both were of the opinion that steroid eye drops don't raise blood sugar.
