Is it true? What is a calorie? How far calorie counting is practicable? Any thoughts.

Let us not go for the physicist meaning of calorie. As we all know that on gram of carb produces 4 calories. So for LCHF diet holders 100 grams of carb produces 400 calories. For a common diabetic man the average calorie requirement is 1600 to 2000 calories depending upon the metabolic function.Rest part should come from fat and conversion protein to carb.Hence a diabetic person should be concious of calorie intake. Thanks.

Great so you are following LCHF and found it to work. Nice to hear this.

Necessity is the mother of invention as they say, so if one needs to get to your state then they will have to learn the basics. If someone can't then either they find someone who educates them or forget about LCHF diet altogether.

There are many forums dedicated to LCHF world over where diabetics teach other diabetics on carb counting etc. Even a Grade 4 student can learn it in less than an hour if taught properly. It's like learning to drive a car. One can take a horse to the water, but can't force the horse to drink the water. That the horse has to do on its own.

Just like one would not treat an alcoholic by pushing more alcohol, diabetes cannot be managed by pushing more carbs and then pushing more and more drugs. There are protocols where even fasting is recommended.

It is not a scientific terminology. But now it is increasingly used in talks and books. It is besides the point.Main thing is for a common person/layman a calorie means a calorie ie.c+p+f is 4+4+9.But it is not so .These values are absolute derived out side human body.Inside the body these values are not absolute,so calories are not the same.

The other part, the practicality of calorie counting,is according to me not very practical. We base the calorie count on how much carb, protein and fat is eaten. In our country or that matter in most places around globe how much is known about nutrition let aside the different ingredients and their nutritional values and calories.Even if some few people who know it is very difficult to calculate calorie value of each food item over a period of time.

So persons claiming to count carb and hence calories are mostly inaccurate and misleading. One has to be truthful at least to himself.

You are able to calculate your carb.that is good. But what about a common person? Can he do all these calculations?

in reply topatliputra

As poer diatiecians and nutritions confirmed that calories to be calculated wt /kg I for here 1kg wt he take 30calories . As average body wt person say if he is 60 kg wt he should take normaly 1800 kg to maintain it if he take below 30 k calorie hehis wt to be reduced.

But generalywe seen so much T2 persons they eat only 1200 calorie further their wt may not change properly. So above rule is not applicable for these generations and particularly for t2 persons. In my opinion 20 calorie food per kg is maximum for t2 persons it is better to reduce further it depend upon his rsistance power. To fulfil his starving hungry he should eat maximum of vegitables and fruits inall varietie For fruits he must selected most of soured fruit like musambi orange watermelon m,usk melon and medium quantity of apple papaya and completely forbidden as mango banana seethaphala and grapes and etc.

My opinion irrespective of wt T2 person may take maximum of 1000 calorie is sufficent irrespective of his starving capacity he may tried for some days otherwise he may increases some calories Thanks

Normally there are many LCHF forums around the world where they do all the teaching as I have already mentioned. So those serious about LCHF can look for a forum that fits their needs.

As for his history, I have checked few of his old posts and he is on LCHF and he did mentioned LCHF here too. A simple visit to his activity will reveal that he is on LCHF

healthunlocked.com/diabetes....

As for teaching here, I searched and found quite a bit of posts dealing with the counting. So, please spend some time searching and going through the search results:

Moreover, my reply was to him and not to you so not sure why you had to comment on what I posted for him.

Thank you for making things clear. In an open forum it is difficult to say who is responding whom, unless name is mentioned.

As the lead was opened by me and you commented on carb. Counting I thought it prudent to comment. One thing is very clear you can preach without any substance and you can not even teach a 4th grade student. So please avoid sarcastic and uncalled for comments. Please devote your energy for the benefit of all in this forum.

"Joined today and wrote a nice story "

You couldn't know of joining date without visiting profile page ;)

Thank you for trying to explain. There is no dispute regarding absolute value of calorie ,it is same for c,p or fat.Let us leave it there..

Now comes the question of carb counting. The web sites on this subject are mostly western and there are many food items with which either we are not familiar or do not eat.So they are not very helpful.

Now tell me, I take veg. Soup ,ingredients are mushroom 2big,spinach50gm, tomato 2 medium size, cabbage a little, cucumber about 2", celery 2", onion,coget2" in one litre of water. I also add4 tsf butter. Now I am at fix ,how much I am taking c+p+f.?

From my diet I can give so many examples.Leave aside a common man, even many dieticians are unable to count calories properly and accordingly advise individually.

I am telling you a recent live experience. In the month of April this year, I was admitted in Asian Heart Intitute,Mumbai. There my bs went hay wares. After several days I decided to scrutise my diet which was provided by hospital. So I asked for dietician of the hospital,a group of three dietician came to me. I asked them if they knew I am a diabetic. Answer was affirmative. Then I asked to calculate my daily calorie requirement ,which they did, around 2000 cals. Then I showed them the lunch, which has just served and asked them to calculate carb as well as calorie. To cut short long story short ,I was able to show them that they are giving me a diet of 3500 cal.and out of which carb. Was80%.

I only want to say that all these calculations are at best very gross with a very wide margin of error. Views are mine only.

kcpl in reply topatliputra

3500-2000 == 1500 kcal excess. So if you were in hospital for a week and the error you highlighted were true then you would have walked out 3 pounds heavier. Did you?

You are pretty good at these calculations. As you agree it is neither easy as it is made out nor it is no where near accurate,at best it is very gross and inaccurate. My point is same all people claiming they are taking 100gms or so carb. are simply do not know how much carb they are taking. They simply succumb to oft repeated lies and lead to believe that they are on lchf diet. What ever improvement is there is because of low carb. It is known for long that any diet low in carb. Will benefit obese and diabetics.
