Relief of constipation is one of the best features of the Parkinson's Improvement Programme. Try brainhelp.info and ask any questions by email after that.

If this is a sudden problem check your meds and make sure your pills are the right dosages. Once I was taking 5.0mg Requip tabs on a 0.5mg prescription and had the same problem. Wasn't funny at the time.

Dried apricots help my husband --- and they taste good. He eats four or five with breakfast every day and more when needed.

Okay... Old remedy... Prune Juice! Half a cup a day, preferably in the morning. I use this and it works great..my husband is very sick and they have him on morphine, so his bowels go whacky all the time, the prune juice has been working wonders for him, keeping him comfortable.. also try Senna-s, take daily.. Hope this helps...

Try Corn Syrup, (Karo), it works in formula for babies, diluted milk for our dachshund(she will eat anything that doesn't eat her first), and in milk for children and adults as well.

I have bad constipation from my meds and tried just about everything. It was getting to the point of bowel obstruction. I finally spoke with my dr. about it and she recommended Miralax. I've been using it since and having success with it.

Miralax did not work for me. Someone told me about HerbLax and it has worked for me and numbers of people I know. I was to bowel obstruction and now take 4 herb lax a night sometime less and sometimes more. It works so far as long as I am faithful to take it

and drink plenty of water.

Drink alot of water in order to keep your intestines in shape. High fiber and fruit diets are nice. Prune juice works too.

Try Golden Linseed sprinkled over your food. I live in UK and eat Kelloggs All Bran for breakfast - works wonders!!

I never laugh at this question...Activia yogurt works great tastes good; stool softeners work but uncomfortable, Miralax works...Senna tea works, prunes, apricots, bran, flax all work less dependably...drop qty of hi sugar desserts.

As prescribed by the Neurologist, I've taken Miralax which works in conjunction with Collace (softens stool) and Benafiber whicih creates bulk. i take the chewable ones which you can take with you anywhere and pop 2 or 3 in your mouth as needed. Hope this helps!!

The one common symptom of PD is constipation.

Fortunately we in Aussie have plenty of fresh fruit which helps . My personal work horse is soft Licorice.

There are tons of good answers up above, read them all, experiment with them (and with your doc's blessings of course.) The more natural the better in my book ...water, exercise, dried fruit, etc. If none of them really do the trick then I concur with the Miralax suggestion. I tried all of the above now do one capful about 3 nights in a row before bed and a night or two off, than 3 more in a row, etc.

Works for me.

Psylllium (Metamucil), fiber, prunes, figs, excercise, or any kind of movement. medications can, and will cause constipation if you are sedentary!!! And remember to drink a lot of water!! :)

Also, in addition to my previous comment, ground flaxseed over oatmeal or other cereal is helpful, as well as consuming adequate oils like olive oil, in your diet. Get a good book on nutrition, or Google "fibrous foods" on the internet.

Hello,

I saw many people have this problem. Has anyone tried flax seed?

Use a table spoon of the whole seed not grounded, soak it in the boiling water for a few minutes and drink the whole thing, before bedtime.

good luck to everyone.

After trying umpteen laxatives available in US, obtained from vaidyaratnamoushadalaya... in India (Trichur,Kerala,India) a pulverized mixture of 3 fruits & 2 herbs, called Bruhat Triphala (Tri-three, phala-fruits)(Bruhat means strong). I take one TBSP dissolved in hot water & drink it after dinner @ night before going to bed. I have been on it for 3 yrs & it has never failed me. You can reduce the quantity, if you develop cramping and frequent loose stools. You have to get it thro DHL ( very expensive), but the medication is dead cheap! For a 2week supply, the price for a packet is $ 1 and 25 cents!! But, you must ask the pharmacist to insert inside the package, a prescription in your name so that the customs won't detain it as a contraband dope! The main three fruits are: Phyllanthus Emblica, Terminalia Chebula, Terminalia Bellarica & two herbs are Cassia Angustifolia, & Glycerrhiza Glabra.

Yes! CELERY JUICE. I use a juicer. Carrots apples grapes 4 stalks celery *&radishes add a peppery zest. Tasty. Drink cup full to brim 6 -8 ounces daily. Linzess also works but be prepared for a complete detox diarrhea. Very expensive. My gastroenterologists left free samples about month's worth! Hope this helps. Lucy B
