Its like waiting for the executioner. Fingers crossed I'll come through it ok and start the new year with improving symptoms. Im told it'll be a four hour operation and that I could be home next day.

Wish me luck.

You will be fine. You are active and the surgeons can do this procedure with eyes closed, but they hopefully won't!! I am almost where you are at, so if you are up for it when feeling good, keep us posted. You Got This!!

I’m very happy for you to take this step. It was two years ago this week that I went through it. My older brother had resisted the surgery until he saw the difference in me. He’s now thrilled with his new lease on life! The success rates are beyond great you don’t need to fear. The tough part to prepare yourself for is waiting for the first programming session.

What happens during tbe waiting? You still take meds as usual, right?

Payparky profile image
Payparkyβ€’ in reply torebtar

Yes you take your meds but you aren’t improved by the DBS device until you have the programming procedure. I had debilitating tremors and rigidity before surgery and adding in recovery from brain surgery it was difficult to sleep or function until I got programmed. But I was able to drive for the first time in 5 years after that. My handwriting capability returned and has actually continued to improve overtime. I was able to dress and shower etc! I’m playing piano again.

LL and anyone else.............

How was the neuropsychological testing and was it really 4 hours? Not looking forward to more torture after I just did another no meds night for an On/Off eval...........Thanks.

LagLag37 profile image
LagLag37β€’ in reply toeschneid

The test was approximately 4 hrs. Most of it was not hard, you had to take your time and go thru it thoroughly. They will tell you some stories and you have to give them back information as you can remember. That was the hardest part for me. It’s important to stay calm, otherwise you’ll get too anxious. I think they aren’t real picky. You’ll be fine. I thought I had blown it but they said I did fine. I did all that worrying for nothing. πŸ™πŸ˜ŠπŸ₯Š

eschneid profile image

LL.........Thanks so much, I'm always thinking ahead and worrying- many times for nothing. Will take your advice and not sweat it. Continue learning your new toy and feel better and better.

gingerj profile image
gingerjβ€’ in reply toLagLag37

When i had mine it was really hot. The tests were done in a small room with no windows. I thought id failed too as i couldn't recall much and guessed most of it. I did get a low score but was told that this was within expectations. Must be low expectations.

eschneid profile image
eschneidβ€’ in reply togingerj

Thanks ginger........... glad things are finally going your way. I remember reading about dbs back aways and some felt improvement just from the electrodes, before turning on. Anyone getting lucky there?

gingerj profile image

Not me. I still feel the tell tale signs of wearing off at the same times. Just hope that switch on works wonders.

gingerj profile image
gingerjβ€’ in reply toDogsWoode

Im not too bad. My head doesn't hurt it's just numb to touch. Weird. Looking forward to going home. Might not be tomorrow now I'm waiting for the final scan to check everything is ok.

If you trust your surgeon, and will relax and let the medical team do their job, you’ll be okay. My husband the surgery the end of November and started yesterday with the β€œsystem” being turned on a very low setting for 3 weeks until he sees the Neurologist and start the process of tweaking the settings/ medications.

Watch your walking when you get released from the hospital. You will have been lying flat for 24+ hoursβ€” use assistance for the first week until your walking and balance are regained. But hope and belief this is the best thingβ€” then attitude will be your cheerleader!

God bless

I was Dx'd with Pd four years ago. But I never believed I was sick and it took a long time before I was willing to take medication. Now I Rytary two or three times daily, mainly because the neuro and my wife's constant nagging. So I haven't been keeping up with the latest news.

If I understand this, a pump literally shoots l-dopa into a vein? The patient isn't involved? He doesn't push the plunger in? It happens mechanically? Not that I'm interested in what sounds like MAJOR surgery. Have I got this right?

TIA,

kevin

gingerj profile image

Not quite. DBS is where the neurosurgeon put electrodes into a certain part of you brain. And eventually a stimulation signal is applied.

Thanks for all the best wishes. Unbelievable support. The procedure went well. More like 6 hours followed by 3 hours asleep in recovery before being moved to a ward. My whole head feels numb but I've not needed any pain medication. Everyone st Salford Royal hospital from surgeons to cleaning staff have been helpful and supportive. Looking forward to going home tomorrow 🀞

Don’t quote me but I believe it’s not as big a deal as it was before the surgery but you still take medicine so that doesn’t make much sense. That’s a good question for your programmer.

Juliegrace profile image

I believe it is the same.

gingerj profile image

My understanding is that DBS won't change anything to do with absorption of medication . The only difference might be some reduction in the amount of medication that i need to take. Hopefully.
