Does anyone on this site have trouble wit... - Cure Parkinson's
Does anyone on this site have trouble with sticking and falling?
DO YOU MEAN FREEZING AND THEN OVERBALANCING ?
Yes. I frequently 'stick' when I start to walk. I've been doing this since the age of 11, so I have learnt coping strategies. It is so much part of my life that I was doing it subconsciously. My PD nurse was seeing me safe from her clinic when I stood & tried to turn towards the door. I froze for a few seconds then I shook myself told myself to 'keep moving'. & walked off. She called me back & told me that this was a clssic feature of PD. It hasn't got any worse so I carry on as usual.
My feet occasionally stick when I first start to walk. I try to walk but it is as if my feet are glued to the ground. Other times, I will be walking and all of a sudden I just stop and freeze.
I did, before my meds were changed.
sticking and falling were my first symptoms and was totally scared. You would have thought this would be a clue to the first doctor who treated me. I actually became quite good at it! Learning to roll and protect my face. All kidding aside, it's very dangerous and you should ask your Dr. or PT how to manage it.
We address it in all our dance classes for Pwp's at the JCC in NYC. Especially dance by Pamela Quinn a dancer with pwp. I believe she has a blog. But a technique we learned in Alexander Technique has helped people. They share how where they would have toppled over, they were able to right themselves . Hope you can find a class.
Thankyou everybody for your replies. I've taken note of what everyone has said. I'm waiting for an appointment to see my neurologist.I've just got to watch I don't fall in the meantime but it's difficult. Best of luck to you all!.
Yeppers I sure do! If I stand up and try to walk right away...I fall over like a tree being cut down in the forest. So I warn my dinner partners that I have to wait for my legs to catch up to my brain before embarking...Such is life with PD!
Hi SallyS
Yes I know what you mean falling like a tree is just like it is. I've fallen just about everywhere , in the house, in the garden, in shops etc. But I don't have a tremor .Do you?
Hi Camper,
I do have a tremor in my left hand (if stressed also in the rt hand.)
Michael J. Fox originally had a twitching pinkie finger...I originally had a pointer finger twitch. Sometimes it's good...sometimes it's not. One day at a time...that's how I live now. I've lost about 50 lbs and that's helped alot w/balance. Another thing that's helping is massage and Tai Chi. Hope this helps...Sally
Yes, I fall just about every day and have done for some considerable time, but have only landed in the hospital once so far (fingers crossed). My falls are usually related to 'freezing' or trying to turn around too quickly, or loss of balance. Most days my legs don 't feel as if they have the strengthj to carry me and yet I have dieted and lost quite a ;lot of weight. It just feels as though there's someone following you around determined to knock you down.
Hello camper,
No, luckily I have never suffered with tremor, it's mainly a balance problem, and freezing.
YES! I had my first parkinson's fall about 1 month ago. I fell in the kitchen while getting a trash bag from under the sink. My feet didn't turn with the rest of me , so I fell and broke my wrist. When I go out in public I have my husband hold my hand. He's much larger than I , so I feel pretty safe anywhere with him. Occasionally my friend picks me up and we do breakfast or lunch, She's very thin and doesn't realize I am continually dizzy and I need her to walk beside me. She walks in front of me and stops to see what's taking me so long. I just know one day Ill trip over her and she and I will both be on the pavement! I sure don't want any more broken bones . They hurt like hell.
I have fallen quite a few times. I'm standing and then I find myself on my back, like an upside down beetle. Loss of balance, dizziness, and sticking have been the cause. I've been lucky and haven't broken anything. Bruised bum an humiliation are about it.
I thank everyone It's so good to hear you are not alone with this sticking and falling. I fell in the hall last September onto the front door and broke my upper arm (humerus). I had to have an operation and have it plated and I was just recovering when I was sorting some washing out in the kitchen when I lost my balance and fell on the same arm and broke my wrist which meant another operation as it had to be pinned. My husband now is only happy when I'm sitting down it's so frustrating!
I'm now taking calcium tablets to stengthen my bones. Hopefully I wont break any more bones!
