I seem to cycle through rougher more intense periods of loss of appetite and/or nausea. Seems to hit me every 3-4 months. Anyone else experience this?
Does anyone have ideas for loss of appeti... - Cure Parkinson's
Does anyone have ideas for loss of appetite and nausea?
I have lost my appetite of food and being Italian it sucks.
Shoot! I bet. Love Italian food--
Try sipping warm fluid after every bite, Dr. suggested to my husband and it has helped. Also with the food-as we get older things change and meds also affect.
Goold luck
I am just losing my appetite and weight. Though it's muscle and fat both, I don't want to be heavy with poor balance... falls. Wish I could smoke pot without hypotension.
ginger is awesome, ginger beer, biscuits, cake..... its known for its anti nausea properties x
Yes, and it's good for your joints. Delish!
Thanks for that! Love gingerbread--Boost and/or Ensure should make a nutritional shake with ginger--I can't face the flavors they have anymore!
looks like the previous writer has the answer - smoke or injest pot !! i have been looking it up on wikepedia - v int
IDK what meds you are taking but everytime i had to up a dose or change meds I would get horrible sick. Requip xl has done me in, but it's the only thing that helps me move. I am one of those that can not take meds on an empty stomach. So usually eat a little then take it later in the morning. also the person who wrote about Ginger, I keep ginger snaps in my pantry at all times. They are good even when you don't have an upset stomach. I forgot to mention-I can't eat eggs anymore in anything. It's the meds. Good luck!
i think its the requip, i get sick to my stomach but if i eat foods with salt it makes me feel better not too much salt but i found healthy chips that have flaxseed in it or organic blue corn chips with things like that i get my appetite back. i too cant eat eggs very often...mornings i eat raw veggies or fruit because im not that hungry but it seems to get my appetite going again and it makes me feel good. water or mix it with juices seems to delute the meds a little bit. i love soups and it seems to sit in my stomach better. i eat small amounts at a time all day.
my neuro took me off the requip when he saw how sick (nauseous) it made me. I had to pull a little demo in front of him to convince him. It wasn't fun. I lost a couple of fillings because I ate so much crystal ginger. In general I also developed a few compulsive behaviors one of which was eating. SO in going from requip to sinemet I lost 30 lbs. Amazing.
I think that cannabis sativa addresses poor appetite and nausea.
Is that marijuana? Unfortunately Missouri does not lead the US in progressiveness--it's not legal here.
Although I can't help with the nausea, one of the ways to protect your body from losing muscle mass due to lack of nutrition, is to sip on Ensure Revigor
This will at least help get healthy weight on your body and protect against malnourishment which is one of the culprits in muscle wasting.
Definitely something I would discuss with a good doc, preferably a very good/well read Movement Disorder Specialist.
Side note: I had the same problem other's mentioned with Requip, and for the first couple months on sinemet (albeit much more mildly)...then it just worked itself out. (why ?)

PS: What meds are you taking and are you taking them on an empty stomach or with food?
Sinemet, Mirapex, Amantadine, Azilect, Citalopram--I space them through out the day but unless I can't keep food down, I eat when I take them. It's just frustrating the way it cycles. I'll have little or no nausea for a couple months, and then it hits me again.
im new to pd only dx 1 month im on mirapixen. one minute i feel sick and cant eat next if it doesnt move its gone, but the heartburn is terrible, it may be the combo ot this new meds and my bp meds. before the mirapixen i would be in bed by this time sound asleep but now about midnight then only get few hrs before im up again.. hopefully this will all even out soon.
I had heartburn when I first started MIrapex--it went away. I have the sleep disturbance from it as well and unfortunately it has not subsided. But compared to the nausea and hypotension with requip, Mirapex is a better match for me. Good luck, and tho I'm sorry for your pd dx, welcome.

I lost 30 pounds in three months! I looked like a war refugee. I got BOOST and ate mashed potatoes and avac\ado and forzen yogart. THEy all helped. I gained five pounds back. I am also exercising to replace the muscles I lost. Frustrating.BUt now I am on the mend. I also eat saltine crackers before i take my meds. My Neuro. says I need more salt because of my loew blood pressure. He doesn't wnat me to get dizzy and faLL SO MORE SALT for me. THEse have certianly helped me. GOod luck!
I also cycle, sometimes I can eat a lot and other times it is difficult to eat. Unfortunately weight loss is not a problem. I'm exercising and eating healthy and only losing about 1-2 lbs a month. 10 more pounds to go!
Thanks for all your ideas and comments. It will turn around again I'm sure. I made my daughter dinner last night and though I didn't eat a lot, I did eat and it tasted pretty good!
So glad to read answers to this question. I've had nausea for years - long before being diagnosed with PD.
There is a great item that works almost instantly for nausea. Get some Candied Ginger. When you take a medication or food item that upsets your stomach, simply rub a piece of Candied Ginger across your gums. Really, it works better than any medication. I buy it at Trader Joe's. Most natural food stores also carry it.
WOW thanks everybody for your answers. Yes. I suffer from nausea and also heartburn from the meds I am taking... PD and BP meds I am taking Ropinrole for the PD. It is the same meds used for restless leg syndrome. I have very little appetite and yet have gained a considerable amount of weight that I don't like, and want off. I do have sleeping problems as well. And the heartburn...yuk. i am lactose intolerant, and no glutin ......and feel like a beached whale!! Have you answers my new friends?
Have you gained weight all over or are you experiencing edema from the meds? A side effect of requip is edema. I don't know if the bp meds have this se too.
After I posted this question and got the feedback, I've found that ginger is my best friend. I make ginger tea and sip it throughout the day and I carry candied ginger with me everywhere. Works for me pretty darn well!
i have it all the time!!!!! sick of being sick and nausea++++i really believe it is the pills++++
