Supplements to Stop Before Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) Surgery

Hubby has been scheduled for prostate surgery on 26 June 2023 at Vanderbilt. Surgeon asked him to stop COQ10, Krill Oil, Turmeric, Aspirin and B Complex for 10 days prior to surgery. I understand that he needs to stop first four which are blood thinners, BUT WHY B COMPLEX?

Can any one explain that to me, why stop B complex?

Thank you!

Niacin and niacinamide can promote anticlotting activity.

Thanks, Art. I see now why surgeon asked to stop the B-complex. In addition, he does take Niacin separately, 350mg daily.

Hi Despe,

My husband is going for his Rezum procedure 1 July. He is going to have 3 short blasts on his median lobe. He has to stop his anti coagulant Xarelto 4 days before the op. Actually his cardiologist said 3 days is sufficient but his urologist wants 4 days just to be cautious.

I am surprised Ray has to stop his sups 10 days before. I will stop the ubiquinol, B vitamins and cod liver oil based on your feedback.

Thanks and all the best for his procedure

Thanks, Millbrook! Same to you. Hopefully, these two procedures will help our hubbies. At least in my hubby's case, anything is better than the catheter and its constant UTIs. At least, you don't have to deal with catheters and their horrible side effects. :(

Will your husband have general anesthesia or regional? My husband's surgeon wanted general anesthesia, but we insisted on regional anesthesia with sedation. Anesthesiologists argued with us about the type of anesthesia, but we insisted having regional anesthesia. Actually, we emailed PubMed findings comparing the two types of anesthesia which concluded that regional anesthesia with sedation is just as effective or even better for high-risk patients. They agreed, I guess, as we never heard from them again! Easy way out with general anesthesia!

Usually for his cystoscope he has mild sedation. But since he is having additional procedure it will be light GA. He is very anxious for all procedures so it’s better for him and the surgeon.

For my hubby's cystoscopy, no sedation, he did fine. I do know that GA is not good for the PD brain.

Art,

I searched for any other B vitamins and their anti-clotting activities and other than B3 as you wrote, no other B vitamins are anti-clotting. I let hubby continue with B1, as I could see the huge difference it made when he stopped it for a couple, three days.

I had back surgery recently and was told to stop ALL vitamins and B Complex was one of them. I asked and was told that anything that can cause bleeding.

Way to go D,

I pushed hard for a regional and a nerve block as well for shoulder/bicep surgery and surgeon/anesthesiologist finally gave in. "We" have to speak up, to protect ourselves from so many that are unaware of possible parkie ramifications even if there isn't always hard clinical data. Why take a chance rocking the boat. Well done.

Ur so right! They really don't know anything about PD brains and reaction to GA, not even the neurologists/MDSs. I asked if anyone is uncomfortable/uneasy about regional anesthesia with sedation, to let me know. . .never got an answer. :) They want to have it easy, no challenge! I did email them PUBMED trials, results, and conclusion on GA vs RA.
