Niacin flush - red skin

just noticed there is a warning regarding flushing.....

I have to take even a relatively low dose B complex with food and a lot of water to avoid flushing. One time it almost looked like hives.

You obviously need to start with a much lower dose - say 50mg - and take it during a meal. You work your way up from there.

Or you can use a 500mg extended release formulation. Like so

You will still need to take these with meals, because without meals, you can still get a slight flush.

I don't tolerate the flush very well and it seems worse during the summer months!

Don’t take it for too long without methylation support. Taking TMG with it will help and eating apple with the intake may also reduce flushing. I tend to notice flushing wherever my skin has been exposed to Sun’s UV ray with past tan. I find it interesting and don’t mind the flushing at all but only do this occasionally.

How long did it last? In my experience, niacin must be taken and increased very gradually to avoid prolonged and excessive redness, the flush with the same dose will disappear after two or three days, it could return if the dose is increased but in a milder form. It should also be taken on a full stomach. 50mg a day is a good starting dose then gradually builds up.

Be careful. In a book entitled Grow Young With HGH, Dr. Klatz warned that 800 mg slow release niacin is associated with liver damage. FWIW

Yes, it is all very confusing. Especially as there is "Slow Release", "Time Released", and "Extended Release" and I am pretty sure they are not all the same thing. If my memory serves, the slow release is the one with the adverse effects (which is what was used in the Auburn study AND is one I can't find). I am taking Time Released 250 mg. I switched to immediate release for a couple of months and then went back to time released as it was closer to what the Auburn study used.

Dr. Klatz was advocating niacin as part of a mix -- he was only cautioning about the specific amount of slow release -- so I wouldn't worry about 250.

I bought 100mg niacin tablets and cut them in half for my HWP. As he gradually got used to that dose, I increased it to 1 whole tablet of 100mg. He still gets some flushing sometimes but that's probably because he doesn't take it with food so I will have to change the time of day I give it to him.
