Upping My Niacin to 1000 mg

Update: I just learned there is an increased risk of diabetes on niacin therapy: heart.bmj.com/content/102/3...

This study was based on people taking Niacin for cardiovascular reasons, which I think would be dosed at 500 to 6000 mg a day: mayoclinic.org/drugs-supple...

According to this video you should be able to eliminate the diabetes risk by not having carbs 3 to 6 hours after your niacin, therefore I will start taking my 1000 mg of niacin after my last meal of the day: How to Take Niacin Without Getting Diabetes youtu.be/76mrnovnGQ4

EVERYBODY: FEAR THE FLUSH! Don't try to start at 1000 mg. You have to gradually get to that point. Do your research.

The best place to read this is on my blog: rbd-pd-protocols.blogspot.c...

I'll just put the "abstract" here :)

I have a high school degree. Caveat Emptor.

I hope everybody is taking Nicotinic Acid.

I've been taking 250 mg of Niacin (Nicotinic Acid) every day ever since this study came out in June of 2021: Niacin Enhancement for Parkinson’s Disease: An Effectiveness Trial - researchgate.net/publicatio...

In this study 47 people took 250 mg of slow release (no flush) Nicotinic Acid for 12 months and all of their UPDRS scores improved (except executive function). Pretty dramatic success.

So... I started on 250 mg time released (could not find slow release) and then switched to fast release (flushing) as I heard time released is not good for the liver (allegedly). I am no worse than I was 18 months ago. Probably a little better.

I should add: I have not been diagnosed with PD. I have RBD, a sore left shoulder and left leg, face dandruff, get dizzy when I stand, and have random involuntary movements. I can say "had" to most of those conditions: My RBD is now very mild and rare. Random involuntary movements are rare. I don't get dizzy when I stand. My face dandruff is better but still there. My sore shoulder is still sore, but not as bad. I have gone back to using a mouse left handed after a year of going right handed. I should also add: I do a lot of things besides Niacin.

So why am I taking this dose up to 1000 mg? Because I've been looking at papers that show Nicotinic Acid may be able to:

Cure Systemic NAD+ Deficiency.

(PwP have low NAD+).

Treat mitochondrial myopathy.

Boost Mitochondrial Biogenesis.

Restore the BBB integrity.

This is pretty cool. I had not seen anything capable of maybe fixing the blood brain barrier.

These all look like good things to me.

So here are the papers: rbd-pd-protocols.blogspot.c...

in My opinion if you want to improve the effectiveness of niacin you need to proportionally increase all the other vitamins, micro minerals and minerals. For example, vitamin C gets along very well with niacin. You don't need to be super precise about this supplement or even exaggerate, simply a general supplement that will increase the effectiveness of niacin at the same dose.

Greetings from Italy Bolt, and best wishes for a bright new year.

Caro Gio,

Ricambio i vostri saluti. È stata una sorpresa molto piacevole leggerli in greco.

Spero che abbiate trascorso bene questo giorno santo.

Late note but thanks Gioc. I added 1000 mg vitamin C to my morning stack after you posted this.

will you continue taking the fast release version?

Yes. With food.

Are we reading about different supplement types? In reading this article.....

nutritionofpower.com/nutrit...

states-

"However, taking 500 mg a once is likely too much; you will ideally want to split your dose into three small servings a day to ensure that your body absorbs this vitamin. Like any dietary supplement, consult your health care provider before taking niacin. Types of Niacin. Niacin is vitamin B3. While niacin, like all other B vitamins, is water-soluble and can be excreted by the body when taken in excess, there are still a number of dangers in consuming doses as high as 500 milligrams.

Such doses have the potential to cause skin rashes, peptic ulcers, increased blood sugar and liver damage, among others. How Much Niacin Is Too Much? Though your body definitely needs niacin, too much of it can actually be toxic. Adults should not exceed 35 milligrams in a day."

Good point. Be cautious and do your research. Established medicine is not a fan of high doses of Niacin. When I say Niacin I am referring to Nicotinic Acid. If you go to the drug store you will see they sell 500 mg flushing niacin.

Be cautious. Also, don't start at 500 or 1000 mg. Learn about the flush.

CAUTION: SLOW RELEASE 800 mg Niacin is associated with liver damage.

Can't the flushing form be replaced with the other safer forms of vitamin B3 instead?

Bolt_Upright profile image

The flushing form IS the safer version.

Wow. I did not know this. What research pointed you towards that conclusion? I had a terrible reaction to true niacin and swore that I would never take it again. However, I have no problem taking niacinamide aka. nicotinamide and my body tolerates 100 mg of it daily with no problems. I also take 20 mg of NADH daily too.

The common B-complex manufacturers use niacinamide as their B3 vitamin on the ingredients list (not actually niacin), so I have to assume that it is not harmful. Can Nature's Way and the other brands be wrong?

Yet, ultimately, these products are all just various forms of vitamin B3, so I cannot understand why they would not have the same effects on a disease.

Admittedly, Tru Niagen seems to fund a lot of research about itself (or so I might speculate given all the nicotinamide riboside research), but even that product is just another B3 vitamin form, isn't it?

In my opinion it doesn't seem like that, they are all different forms and come into play in different chemical reactions and processes in the body. For example, only niacin (nicotinic acid, B3NA) is used for cholesterol control as a drug (See acimipox, en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aci.... There are many differences: from the production of NAD, to autophagy, tryptophan. However, everyone has their own preferences. scienceofparkinsons.com/201... Nicotinic Acid is the only form that binds with GPR109A. This binding is the foundation of the Augusta study that showed to be effective.

I wonder why not use niacinamide which does not cause flush?

For one thing, as I understand it, Nicotinic Acid is the only form that binds with GPR109A. This binding is the foundation of the Augusta study that showed to be effective.

Don't fear the flush. Just respect it :)

I suppose in an odd way, you know that the Nicotinic Acid is working when you do feel the flush.

Re your shoulder pain, Bolt, I've been meaning to write to you for some time that physical therapists named Bob and Brad on you tube say the commonest cause of shoulder pain (mostly in your dominant arm ) is the ball of the shoulder coming forward from the socket with consequent impingement of a tendon (due to mechanical causes like stooped posture, or your shoulder blades being too spaced apart and not opening the chest out wide enough), and they have a series of exercises which improved the pain in my right shoulder (I'm right-handed) as soon as I tried them. Unfortunately I've lost the original link to the video on youtube with the exercises that I tried but here is another of their videos on youtube with exercises that you could try doing youtube.com/watch?v=4sa-6ws....
