Boswellia, supplements

About 2 months ago I developed a swollen finger, and generalised pain in my wrists knees and ankles. I also had stiff hands in the morning, which I initially thought was Parkinson's related. Googling in the usual way brought me to the conclusion that I might be suffering from an inflammatory arthritis. Luckily I also realised that I could just toddle along to healthunlocked-> RAS. So when we look at Parkinson's we see that although medicines may provide some relief and work well for some people, there are many that have significant side effects. In addition there are many supplements and natural foods, which can be as beneficial as the prescribed medicines - and may not have the same side effects. The same goes for inflammatory arthritis. For instance turmeric is a great anti-inflammatory and benefits both Parkinson's and Arthritis.

The other strange thing is that my Parkinson's has now improved, so that I no longer seem to be suffering from orthostatic hypertension (dizzyness) and feel no stiffness when getting out of a car. There has to be a bit caveat here though, that I have never been diagnosed with PD, although I did have many of the symptoms. I lost my sense of smell, was constipated, had a grumpy face, my voice was becoming more quiet and I had the begginings of a resting tremor. I still have the grumpy face sometimes though if I eat well and exercise I can appear almost normal. For most of the effect I attribute this to Mannitol and exercise - but only about 3 grams of Mannitol per day.

My only concern is the some of the supplements that I took for Parkinson's may have contributed to my arthritis. More likely is my consumption of hoppy beer.

Funnily taking large amounts of vitamin B1 which also have been seen to reduce inflammation maybe that taking this has helped my symptoms. The other thing that may have helped is Boswellia (frankinsense).

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/282...

In conclusion " BAs are promising agents in slowing the progression of Parkinson's disease if appropriate data become available about their safety and efficacy in humans."

Again the concern with Boswellia it its long term safety, but I have seen no studies showing any side effects though one person complained of reflux and one person was worried about reduced testosterone. Strangely my reflux has gotten a bit worse, but I had put this down to wine, which I really shouldn't be drinking but have always regarded as heaven in a glass.

Ultimately I am now becoming a bit wary of supplements though still consider them a better bet than mainstream medicine i.e. I would prefer pregnenolone over prednisone and never take a dopamine agonist.

The best medicine is probably a healthy diet. Exercise helps, but you can never outrun your fork

One thing a GP said is don't use any supplemental medicine for more than 3 months - which is a good point. Though when I stopped Mannitol the constipation soon returned and I started to developed piles from straining, so soon back on that.

Anyway the arthritis has stabilised, and I know if I could just stop eating rubbish I could probably get rid of it.

Yes, eliminating rubbish would probably change everything. Increase fiber and drink plenty of water to move the bile through your intestines. It is worth making the investment in a healthier diet as a good portion of our immunity is in our gut.

While I do not have Parkinson's (my son does) I too have used Frankincense for pain and it worked quite well, though I only use it for about a month.

Exercise does help because movement is the language of our brains.

It already sounds as though you are very wise in your own discoveries. I wish you continued success.

Regarding the boswellic acids, I have used multiple forms to good effect over a period of years with no problems. The boswellic extracts are some of the more potent natural anti-inflammatories available and there is a significant difference between the different types.

Basic boswellia extracts like this are effective :

vitacost.com/vitacost-boswe...

More advanced extracts like this 5 Loxin / AKBA extract are more potent :

vitacost.com/vitacost-syner...

This newer and more advanced form is more potent and requires a lower dose than the other forms :

vitacost.com/vitacost-root2...

I have tried these three and found them to be beneficial in terms of anti-inflammatory action and the Ares Flex version required the lowest dose.
