Very Windy

I have been diagnosed with colitis I'm taking pantasa granules twice a day which seem to be working , but the farting is awful (sorry to be blunt) any ideas on how to ease this, I'd be grateful, if I hold it in it gets uncomfortable

I find that certain foods make me very windy - not surprisingly cabbage and beans! If you are fairly newly diagnosed, it is a good idea to keep a food diary for a month or so and see if windy episodes tie in with anything in particular. Try not to hold it in if possible or you can get painful cramps.

Thank you for replying, Yes i need to look at my diet I think, I do eat a lot of sugar free stuff and someone has suggested plant based sweetners

I'm new to the world of microscopic colitis and also suffered from horrendous wind. I spoke with a dietitian about this and found the majority of diet, sugar free stuff I was eating and drinking was the cause. It's the sweeteners they use, plant based sweeteners are less likely to cause wind. I still get some wind, which is normal in everyone, but within a few weeks after changing sugar free stuff I had a big change in wind habit's.

Apparently the sweeteners ferment in the stomach producing gas. The more I learnt about sweeteners the more the realised it's better to have normal sugar, just not lots of it.

Hello Honey

Oh you have made me laugh . I'm sorry if this offends you but other peoples' 'farts' can be so funny.

On a more serious note: I'm assuming you're currently in a flare, is that right? I remember my very first flare 4 years ago when I had terrible wind, not to mention the numerous trips to the toilet which was left in a very smelly state. This was somewhat embarassing when I was at a friends house for the evening! Fortunately she told me where the room spray was and that knowledge came in very handy. In my own home I burn a scented candle in my bathroom when I'm in a flare.

I digress...as far as I'm aware there's nothing that can be done about the wind other than looking at your diet and ensuring that you're not eating fibre (which cause the gas) when you're in a flare. You might also google fodmap diet to see which foods to avoid when in a flare.

Good luck to you - it does get better 😀
