Mesalamine side effects

I recently have been diagnosed with UC and have been prescribed rowasa (mesalamine enema) and lialda (mesalamine oral). Bleeding has reduced however has anyone had issues with white coatings on their stool? Is this normal or should I be concerned?

I've heard of this happening with the enema's before. Also, keep in mind we do produce mucus in our stools. It's great that you are responding to the meds too.

I take both; Asacol in tablet form and Mesalamine when in a flare but have never experienced the white coating you mention.

I take Lialda and Rowasa. I'll be sure to mention it to my gi doc next week during my appt. I have no other serious symptoms besides light cramping sometimes.

It's not from the enema itself is it? Have you needed the loo straight away? I know with the suppositories you can get a white coating but that is to do with the suppository- a waxy sort of coating....?

Good though that your symptoms are settling.

That's what I've bee thinking, maybe stool that's stuck in there that I haven't passed is getting coated while I'm using it. Yes it looks waxy almost like paper that surrounds the stool. The first few days I was just using the enema and I saw no blood but now since I have started using both I'm seeing a little blood still but not nearly as much as it was. Maybe it just needs time to work. Im hoping I can be off the enemas after a month because taking them is really uncomfortable.

Hi ashlynn2 I wondered if you had any update on this? I have had this white paper like coating you describe on my stools twice now. I am currently waiting on a colonoscopy appointment following elevated fecal calprotectin levels. Did you ever work out what it is? Thanks 😊

I believe it was due to the enema medication. I have been off it since then and haven't had that issue since.
