Is anyone else vitamin D deficient? I've had blood tests and they've actually come back with an answer for the first time in a long while with that I'm deficient in vitamin D. Was wondering if anyone else has the same problem as it isn't something I've come across in IBD

Although I take the vitamin D supplement my nephrologist prescribes, I don't know whether I'm deficient in the vitamin. That's a good question. I don't recall vitamin D deficiency being listed on the lab's printout of what my nephrologist has me tested for. I will look. I believe I could be deficient in Vitamin D because I avoid exposure to sunlight in an effort to avoid melanoma skin cancer. My daughter, now in her late 50s, developed melanoma after years of overexposure to sunlight and now must avoid it.

I was told I am too and was given a prescription for Vitamin D medication which recently ran out. I had to see my GP this week and mentioned the Vit D to her, asking whether I needed another prescription. She told me that most people in the UK should be on it.

Vit D is poorly absorbed through diet with crohns, and if on certain medication being out in this sun is a no go (due to photosensitivity). Iv been on Vit D for years with no probs

My blood work often comes back Vit D deficient. I take 4000 IU's daily, and it still doesn't seem to be enough. My GP questions everything, and seems to think I am lying about taking my daily supplements when it shows deficiency on the test. Ugh! My GI specialist understands and said it is common in Chron's because the body is unable to properly absorb vitamins it needs. Every doctor has a different opinion, and it makes the struggle that much harder. (sigh)

I was diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency 3 years ago although I had been taking daily calcium carbonate and Vitamin D3 supplements for several years mainly due to osteoporosis (caused by prescribed steroid use). I now have quarterly ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) injections as well. There is a separate blood test for Vitamin D deficiency and can't recall why I had it but guess probably on the back of my osteoporosis which is not an uncommon condition for those who have been on steroids long term. So I would guess that Vitamin D deficiency might not be uncommon amongst those of us with Crohns even if undiagnosed.

Hello, my doctor closely monitors my vitamin D and a few others. I was deficient in D and iron, put on supplement for both. Yes, to what others have mentioned that with Crohns you can have poor absorption.
