Any exercise will help tone up the muscles that are being used. So treadmill or outside running will do the trick for your leg muscles, your arms too will be slightly more toned if you use them i.e. pump them when running fast and uphill. Lots of women find they lose stomach fat too. Brilliant eh!! :)

It'll certainly help. :) If you can, you may want to consider adding in cycling on your non-running days. Here's an article I found that talks about the different muscles used during running and biking.

I would seriously recommend also cycling and swimming, in that order. Cycling on a stationery bike can be great fun because you can watch the news etc if you have tv at your gym. Cycling will make your legs toned and muscly, swimming will make them much more toned but will increase overall flexibility. They are both great for your core.
