Slipped on the ice, after a tincy Burns night celebration. Now I am sporting a fetching cast encasing a broken wrist. All the rage nowadays, don't you know.
Gutted. So no running for a few weeks. Any ideas how I am going to keep fit?
I wouldn't mind but there I was toasting old Rubby, not knowing the way the evening would turn. And I'm not even Scottish!
Note to self, whiskey and ice DON'T mix.

Poor you, that is really bad luck! You can still brisk walk to keep up some level of fitness if you don't have access to an exercise bike.
You could do some of the stretches and lunges that I think are in one of the podcasts (not sure which). There is a 10 minute cario workout I saw once on youtube that was quite hard work (long before I started running), I don't have a link, but it involved jumping from one side of a 'line' to the other. I'd have a trawl around and see if you can mashup a workout routine that you can do in a few days time.
Good luck, I hope your wrist heals fast. I broke my toe (little one, admittedly) and ran a 5K race 10 days later, not ideal, but the point is that you could be up and running faster than you assume. If not, then plenty of visualisation and some exercise at home. Chin up
So sorry to hear this, Tricia - hope it heals fast. I wouldn't have thought running would be an option for a few weeks at least - won't your wrist swell around the cast if you overuse it? However, perhaps you could do some leg work on an exercise bike and at least keep those muscles working?
Thanks Annie, no I don't think running is going to be an option for a couple of weeks. Looks like I'll have to join a gym or do a lot of stair climbing. X
Look on the bright side, I can't imagine many people are going to be out running at the moment with all this snow. Although i'm gutted about that!!!!!!!!!
Ah Tish! That was not a clever thing to do hun. Brisk walking, as long as you are wearing a sling to support your arm, will be fine. Don't try and run-you will probably fall and fracture your other wrist :-). Yeah, lay off the Whiskey, lol!!
Poor you, so unfair! hope it's not too sore. It's soooo frustrating, having got off the couch (congratulations on your graduation ) and getting hooked on running, to be unable to get out there.
As for the keeping your fitness up, ask DeliaItaly, she broke her wrist during C25k.

I think the whisky would be okay if the ice was inside it. Take care of yourself and find something else to keep your legs moving. As Soozz said, Delia broke her wrist during c25k so I'm sure you'll find some useful ideas and inspiration in her blogs.
Thanks for the heads up Soozz and Legion, I'll have a look to see how Delia managed. First job is getting dressed unaided. I had my 5 year old helping me yesterday. I'm hoping when I get my full cast tomorrow it will be easier.
Yes, will definitely be easier Trish. I found it very hard with a back slab when I smashed my elbow, and had three other fractures x2 ulna and a finger) in 2010. Only problem I did find was getting sleeves over the top of the cast.
A belated 'get well soon' it is gutting for you, but stay off the running get on yer bike (stationary one) and drink whiskey only when staying indoors. Here's to a speedy recovery.
Hi Jems, I'm ok, just been back to the hospital to get my plaster changed and see the consultant. He told me under no circumstances should I run he thinks if I fall I could potentially break my arm again, due to leverage pressure on the plaster. I know they say this to cover all eventualities. Still feeling a bit miserable about it. Think I will join the local gym. Can't bare to lose the fitness I have gained over the last 3 months. Arrrghhh! Sorry to let out my small sorry state. I know everyone is so supportive. It's great to have people who care. Tricia x

I am a gym member and have been on the treadmill for the last while, I see a couple of people there walking with their arms in plaster - must be all the rage that whiskey and ice I have made some really good friends at the gym so you never know you might even enjoy it. I know it won't be as good as running but that achievement will never leave you and you will have the knowledge that you also graduated the 'will of iron' test undertaken by those who have significant time off but return to running....as you will
keep us updated with whatever training you manage to do as it is sure to help others in a similar position
I am so sorry to hear about your bit of poor fortune, Tricia!! But, please, let's not be rash and give up on mixing whiskey and ice quite yet!! A bit of bourbon on the rocks may be just what the doctor ordered!!
All kidding aside, I do hope that you have a full and quick healing!!
I think that you may be surprised that your fitness level may not fall off as quickly as you worry it may. I think that if you just stay a bit active with any activity that your arm can handle, you will be fine!! You have worked hard to get to where you are and a bit of misfortune isn't going to be enough to take that from you!!
Maybe think of the extra plaster appendage as weight training!!

Thanks Steve, still quite sore so not don't much of anything at all this week. On a plus the ice and snow has gone so I am going to start with some brisk walking tomorrow.
I tried to run on the spot the other day as an experiment. That did not end well. I'll try again in another week when the pain has subsided. I still feel optimistic though. I think you are right. As long as I do something my fitness shouldn't suffer too much.
I have just bought Murakami's 'what I talk about when I talk about running'. Hopefully that will keep my mind focused.
