I am on week 2 and my progress isn't going so well. week 1 went great although each time my calves wre really burning. I thought I need to just power through this, I haven't done any exercise for years so it is to be expected. Each time it is worse. I started week 2 and the pain meant I walked the second half, went back to week one but it was still a real struggle. The pain is particularly bad down the side of my left leg. I've tried stretching before and after. My trainers are quite new but basic (karrimor) - I can't afford posh fitted trainers until I know I will be doing this regularly. Do I just keep going and hope it will get better?
I seem to be going backwards! Advise please... - Couch to 5K

It sounds as though you are having a difficult time, Iching 1! I think I'd be tempted to start with working up to achieving a (relatively pain free) 30 min walk with perhaps some intervals of faster walking in there if the notion strikes (and the legs allow!). Once you've got that under your belt try introducing some of the 60 seconds jogs and work from there. It doesn't matter how long it takes to complete the programme as you can be satisfied that every time you make it out the door you are taking a positive step towards a fitter, healthier, happier you! Good luck and keep blogging!
Hi, you shouldn't be having pain at a level thats so uncomfortable. I also have 30+ years of zero exercise to my name and my calves did hurt in the beginning but got better. I run in fairly basic running shoes too - I dont think we need to invest in expensive gear at our level.
Maybe this link has some useful hints.
I like Oona's suggestion of trying to just walk first. This might just be a bit much for you right now. If the pain is severe and continues, it may be more then sore muscle. Wishing you the best!
Thank you all for your comments. I have been out tonight and walked briskly for just over half hour. Calves are sore but not a sad so think I will keep at it. At least if I keep going I am getting some exercise and it is better than giving up and going back to the couch. Thanks again folks!
That's the spirit, Iching!! Anything is better than a return to the couch!! There are so many things that can cause the pains. Just be mindful of the pain and make sure that it doesn't get worse! Good luck!
