So I failed...

my first run. But who was I kidding. I went on holidays and walked often, but never ran. So I came back after 13 days of no runs and tried to pick up where I left off. Result....failed my first ever run. I could feel myself wanting to do it and cardio wise it would have not been an issue...but my leg cramped miserably.

So today I have downloaded W6 so that I can go back to build myself up this week.

Wish me luck...

Never think of it as failing - at least you made the effort to go out for a run, even if it was a bad one! That effort should always make you feel a little bit proud :)

Heading back a bit could be helpful, get your body back in the swing of things again. All the best, hope your next run is much better!

Thanks... the run was yesterday and I don't know how much I ran and how much I walked... I was too disappointed to take notice...lol. But I dusted myself off and did Wk6R1 today... I suceeded. Thanks :) I think the fact that I did the whole 9 week program without falter was hard on my ego when I couldn't do it yesterday.

Agreed!! Being bothered is definately the hardest part so you should definately be proud of that. So, the run didn't quite go to plan, but it's nothing you can't sort out :) Us runners are nothing if not determined :D

Good luck!

Thanks Doggymum... back in the saddle today. I couldn't even give it a days rest without trying again. I did the W6R1 faster than when I did it a few weeks ago so at least that is a plus... My legs are just very tight!! Amazing what can happen in such a short time... Onwards and upwards... I have to confess that I was a little scared that if I didn't get an accomplishment in that it would easlily turn into ditching the running... but here I am :)

You haven't failed. I can absolutely recommend John Bingham's book 'No Need For Speed' There's a wonderful section in it about how the runs/races which you don't finish are as much a part of the running experience as those in which you do really well. He argues that part of being a runner is listening to your body when it tell you NOT to run. Taking a few days break (or taking a step back in the plan) at the right time is far better for you than carrying on regardless and hurting yourself even more. You'll get there, I know you will!

Sounds like a good book... I would like to read it, I will look it up. Thanks!!

I think for me the issue was I had just graduated and only completed one post-grad run when I went on holidays...so I hadn't built up weeks of running at 30 minutes... I guess I will just have to compromise and make a new plan :)

You definately didn't fail, you just did a shorter run to get back out there. You'll soon be back to 30 mins and interval are good for your fitness. :-)
