Having done W6 runs 1 and 2 in reverse order (I'd put them on my ipod backwards and I wasn't paying attention to Laura), I repeated W5R3 to try the 20 minutes again. This was last Sunday on a treadmill in the gym because my jogging route was flooded and I didn't fancy swimming. Anyway, buoyed up by my success, I decided to stop going backwards through the programme and tackle W6R3 outside.
I checked out the meadow and, although it was muddy, the water had receded so I warmed up and set off confidently. It was more windy than I expected and slippy underfoot which made my legs ache after one circuit (though it could have been stiffness from the spin class the day before). The rough ground felt hard work after the treadmill and suddenly it all felt too much.
"Keep going!", I said to myself but no. My legs just stopped dead as if someone had thrown the off switch. I took five deep breaths and knew it was my mind playing tricks. The switch flicked back on and off I went again to complete my 25 minutes (including an extra 20 seconds to make up for the brief hiccup). I had run 3.2km - much better than the 2.5km I had managed before.
Week 7 here I come!
