Good morning folks and welcome to the Corner!

Here we are again... !

It has been, here in Staffs Moorlands, still pretty chilly. Yesterday, the real feel -0.6 reaching the dizzy heights of 2.8 later in the day!

The corner is cosy.. we have some apple and sultana muffins today, on special. Crispy croissants... almond and plain and a few really excellent smoothies this morning! Grab your cushion and sit a while.

With the weather being colder and yet another round of appointments for Mr OF... I am quite glad my running is sort of on hold, walking , wrapped up like a small Michelin Man, is fine, I can stay warm !

What have I been ruminating on this last few days, I wonder?

Well. I have been reading your posts obviously, trying to support, empathise, sympathise and maybe give a little shove occasionally too !

You are all doing absolutely wonderfully... following the plan, reading the pinned posts, to help you and more importantly, taking notice of the sound advice offered there. Sometimes we do have forum friends who go slightly off track, and despite the best efforts of the Admin' team and other experienced runners, move on too quickly and without thought, often ending up injuries or feeling is disheartened that they leave the plan!

That prompted my rambling for this week ! Advice? Sound advice.

We decide to start running, If we are sensible, we should try not to just fly out there, but to give it some thought.

What then should we be thinking about ? What advice might we be given before we do begin ?

Some ideas, just to muse on, that I have gleaned from seasoned runners, trusted and valued running sites and basically some common sense too !

Here goes :

Start walking first... if you have not been doing any physical exercise at all... begin with some walking; as my Nan used to say, the cheapest and best exoteric ever!

Buy some decent running shoes. Yes, I hear you! “ How do I know I am going to enjoy this . I don;t want to waste my money. “ But, if you start, in ill-fitting, uncomfortable shoes that were never intended to run, you are likely to feel discomfort, maybe suffer n injury and from the very beginning, you will not enjoy it.

There are bargains out there... :)

Make a plan. ( yes I know you are on one), but a plan to keep a track, maybe even a running log of each run. Share your plans and your progress, bore everyone you know with your running chat! Most of us do !

Follow the C25K guidelines, they are there for a reason. They will help you to complete it ! The advice therein is not just written for fun.

The warm ups and cool downs, the essential rest days and the extra core strength and stamina advice ? All there to get you to the Graduation Podium safely and, enjoyably!

Listen to your body. It is your very best running friend. That voice in your head that is telling you, well done, that feels uncomfortable, that really hurts, this feels just fine ? Listen and hear.

Shake it up a bit. If you are able, try as you move on, to vary the route, or even the location. Simply reversing a route... can be fun too. The rut you may be feeling you are in , may not be there, as you go around the new corner!

I am going to use one of my favourite quotations here now..

Comparison is the thief of joy.

This is your run, your pace and yours alone. Do not compare your running to anyone else's; which brings me to the penultimate bit of advice, which so many of us have followed from the word , go !

Slow and steady,, It will get you through these nine weeks, safely, hopefully injury free and most of all, enjoyably.

This plan is for running, not racing... it is a great one. Enjoy it!

So... your turn... a few things to ponder on and maybe share an answer or two with the rest of us?

What is the best advice about this programme, and or your running which you have read, been given, or even given to yourself?

Mine? Well;

My own advice to me... Slow and steady., my famous mantra on here.

The best advice I read about C25K...Enjoyment not endurance.

And... the best, best, advice from a dear friend, loved and lost, to so so many of us here and the thought he left every single one of us with, at the end of every single post he wrote.

“Keep Running, keep smiling.”

That says it all.

Okay... who is going to pop in today I wonder...? The fire is just smoldering gently, the weather is set to be a tad warmer as we move on this weekend... Come on in and share.

All welcome:)

Hi Oldfloss and friends, good to be here! I’m writing this between volunteering sessions at Cardiac Rehab, where I help out every week. Much of the advice on here is similar to that which we give to patients, namely to take things steadily, listen to your body and don’t be afraid to take a break if you need to.

We also emphasize to patients that everyone is on their own rehab journey so they shouldn’t compare themselves to other patients or get disheartened if others appear to be progressing ‘faster’. Every course is tailored to the individual and has the flexibility to be adapted where necessary - again that’s something that should be applied to our running if required.

I’m in the middle of various hospital visits at the moment. It’s quite a trek to keep travelling to London but I’m grateful for the way I’m being looked after and monitored and hopefully they’ll come to some conclusion about future treatment in due course.

I’m grateful for the support from family, friends and the running community and trying to stay focused on my future rather than the past.

Good luck everyone, enjoy your running and have fun! 🏃‍♂️‍➡️🏃‍♀️‍➡️👍

Hello you. Your cushion is always waiting here for you and you are so busy; still giving back so much.

Yes indeed, ... you are able to draw a comparison with your patients... steady progress and alwyas listening to your body... absolutely. The other things too... how interesting, that what fits the running, can also fit the recovery plans and the rehabilitation plans, of so many different people.

I do like that comment that you are focused on the future. It can fuel our progress, we can learn from and treasure parts of it, but the key really is to look to that future with positivity...

Thank you so much for popping in again and sharing your thoughts with us all x

Keep running, keep smiling. Advice from a man who we miss I looked him up when coming back and was so sorry to see we had lost him. A giant of this community along with all you lovely admins.

My advice to me is find your own groove. My daughter in law (an ace runner who knocks out 20km for fun ) asked me how it was going on Week 2 Run 1 and I was gearing myself up to explain away the lack of speed, distance and time. Then I remembered it’s my thang to quote the song and actually wherever I am in that voyage of rediscovery is absolutely fine. I’ve started again it isn’t easy, but no achievement ever is. Best thing is I’m doing it, it’s my groove and for now I’m loving being back

That won’t always be true but my groove has a prize just for me - I feel better doing it, no medals, no fanfares, no sponsorship deals just a sense of wellbeing that’s down to me alone.

Running is coming home and when I feel a bit rubbish that’s the thought I cling on to

Hello and welcome ! Yes indeed... one of the saddest days ever..to lose such a wonderful person who supported so many of us...he lives on with us here x

I love that advice... absolutely perfect... Find your own Groove! Your own runs, your own way. It is something that maybe does come as our runs continue and evolve bit it is so good when that feeling comes to us.

Running certainly is...coming home. Thank you so much for popping in and sharing this with us x

Mmmm...those muffins sound good! I have been walking more, but haven't got the courage to go out in the cold weather for a proper run!!!

That is just fine... Welcome !

Do sit a while and relax. Yes...the weather really cannot make its mind up. It is molder here but no, very wet and rainy! The armer days are on the way, but sometimes it is easy to forget that!

Walking ...well... it really is a great exercise and I am doing so much of that right now too! It impacts our body much more than folk realise, and is well worth doing, when you find other exercise out of the question.

Well done you on that ! Those runs...thank goodness, they are so patient !

Hi Oldfloss

As you know for me it’s trying to sort those blood sugars , which I had got down but for some reason they have popped up again. Only thing I can put it down to is my old friend stress.

I have however been out enjoying short runs not what I want but it’s better than nothing, weights and yoga also going well but some days you just think give me a break !!!

Have had a lovely day in the garden and scrubbed out my ice bath 🥶 going to brave up and get back in as it was a real help before. Also several of my neighbours have them and we are all being featured in a village article about the benefits so I should practice what I preach 😂🥶

Glad you are out walking, nothing like some fresh air and nature to improve our spirits.

Wishing you and Mr OF some peace and calm xx

Blimey...brrrrrr...ice baths...! Mind you. I have enjoyed many swims in the sea in winter months...in the past!Welcome...and well done on getting some exercise in...!

Your village group sound a very hardy crew...Do any other of them run too?

Blood sugar fluctuations.. I give up! How do we stop stress? My repeat tests are in just over a week's time..it should prove interesting.

Thank you for your wishes...we're getting there.

Slow and steady...my painting is helping with the calm xx

Latest cubist style skills with my art class...Rhinos...bet they don't have raised blood sugar!! X
