CATCH-up-CORNER...WEEK 3...Slip off the running shoes and come on in!

Good morning running friends.

The Corner is open, warm and comfortable and there is a welcome her for all... New runners, old friends and those of us who are repeating this wonderful programme or simply. Popping in for a chat!

Some rather tasty home-made biscuits, ginger, some lemon muffins and some fresh croissants too !

Grab a cushion and sit right down!

Well... look at that snow!

So says the motto of the US Postal service. Originally apparently first spoken by the Greek Historian, Herodotus.

I have used this quotation before, because I think it fits so many of us and our running, perfectly!

We run in many locations and in many countries and climes, but, one of the things we have in common...is weather!

This last week as I have been reading your posts... I have, as I so often am, in awe of the sheer strength and determination of all of you.

Whatever the weather... out you go...!

The extreme weather has, here in the UK, over the last month or so, ranged from unseasonably hot, to the first frosts of winter, and encompassing, storms, gales, and floods.

Did that stop you... did it heck! As long as you felt safe, out you went... !

We do, here on the forums post our seasonal posts with reference to heat, cold and inclement weather, and we do know, that many of you do read those and do heed any advice. A few folk... maybe not !

Many of you know exactly what to wear and how to prepare for the weather you are heading out in, although, there have been posts now and again, creeping in, asking advice about running in cold and wet weather!

So, I had a bit of a nosey around( you know what I am like... ), and I found some great stuff!

Including this... take a read,,, it is interesting! From the Buxton Mineral Water website... who'd have thought it!!!

buxtonwater.co.uk/articles/....

There is a heck of a lot of sound advice there, but the main thing to remember is, however much we feel we want to run, or even need to run, we need to be the ones who make the judgement call. In other words... we need to be sensible!

If it is not safe to head out...then just don't.

Me? Well, I have been out in all weathers... I am not a fan of heading out in torrential rain... but if it rains when I am out there... its fine. It is just wet. I have read a few posts over the last day or so, where I am put to shame by those who HAVE headed out in torrential rain... but we are all different. We are talking serious rain here! Please do read some of the posts on this forum. You will be amazed!

I love to run fairly early in the mornings, Spring bringing the early promise of the warmer days to come, and I am able, because of running early, ( in the UK), to beat the heat of the Summer; the cooler Autumn weather is pure joy. and I will run in Winter, the first fresh falls of snow on the fields, but never, ever, when it is icy... ever!

I have too, waxed lyrical, about many of my outings in all manner of weather... The Beast from the East run...( and the two sequels to that... the The Hound of the Baskerville run. The White Van man run... and the Bambi run ! Oh such fun!!!

So... what about you?

Maybe, if you have been running over the last few weeks, you are beginning to see and feel the seasonal changes... maybe you have run in the rain for the first time? Maybe you have found out that even if the wind is against you on the way out, it is still against you on the way back in :)

Maybe you are doing C25K inside...? In which case there may be other issues which affect you !

Grab a cushion... grab a snack and rest a while... time to share your thoughts !

Looking forward to seeing you.

Oldfloss x

PS

Just for a laugh... this was the Beast from the East running ramble, from six years ago!!! Eeek!

I bought gloves recently and have worn them, but not for running yet. Don't have a hat as my entire family stresses I "do not have a hat head", but I'll see if that's something to use as it gets colder - maybe I'll borrow a beanie!

The mask idea is interesting - wonder what that means? Anybody reading this who runs with a mask? I do have a - snood? - somewhere, but not sure if that would work running.

Haven't run much in the last few weeks, but I am definitely layering - either a short or long sleeve non-cotton top with a thin layer over. Each time I have done that I have quickly wrapped the top around my waist; though it's good to have the layer to begin with.

I'm out of shorts and into proper running trews for the winter.

Not yet worn my running waterproof.

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply toGthants

Oh gosh... I need my hat or cap! I have a balaclava... and in really extremely cold weather I wear that under my bob hat! It works wonderfully and keeps ears and forehead and chin warm too!

Layering is really the way as you say... you can take off, but not put on if you have not got the layers! I think the time will come when that waterproof may be needed, but until then. sit back, have another snack and rest up until that cough goes! x

Thank you for calling in today!

Good post from you Oldfloss, I also read that poem from just over 6 years ago about "The Beast from the East" that was about two months before I began C25K.I have ran in rain, a little snow and my coldest run was ran in a temperature of - 6C at a parkrun.

This morning I ran in a temperature of +6C, it was 6K in a time of 44:59, despite all the recent rain there were very few puddles due to the good work the council did earlier in the year in improving the path and diverting streams from flooding the path in the woods where I run, I enjoyed my run this morning especially where some of the trees glowed in beautiful Autumn colours.

You and I have come a long way Al !

You have run in many weather conditions too I know and often much colder, than we further down South, than you. -6 does sound a tad cold and we do need the right gear for that sort of temperature...

A good run this morning and a slightly warmer one...if a wet one!!! Your run sounds to have been one full of the Autumn shades... beautiful.

You have earned your sit down and your rest here in the Corner... thank you for popping in today!

🍏 🥶 Coming in out the cold to warm up. It’s -6 here in the mountains with a feel like factor much worse, so am delighted to grab some coffee & a croissant while we wait for sunrise here in the Canadian Rockies . Thanks as ever for your warm hospitality Floss and sharing so much from your heart with us. I am hoping later to brave the cold and do my run but think it will be a road run to avoid the very icy trails and paths. Although I have cleats for my shoes to run in the snow, like you I won’t challenge the ice🧊 We enjoyed a wallow yesterday in the natural hot springs which was very therapeutic in spite of the freezing rain whirling around us. Quite an experience! The weather changes so quickly up here. Suddenly it disappeared & a bit of light peeped through the dark cloud….as it always does on our sad & heavy days..so take heart anyone who is feeing like that today. Must nip back to the family. Thanks Floss. Xx

Good to see you here in the warm with us... and brrrrr, your lovely lodge location sounds very chilly!

You do need to be really careful in those conditions and be really wary of falling! Ice, is for you clearly, as for many of us a real turn off... black ice being the worse in my book!

That hot spring sounds amazing and how surreal to have the warmth whilst the icy rain was falling! It must have felt very invigorating indeed!

You are having a super time... enjoy and stay safe and we will see you very soon. Thank you for taking time to pop in! x

I've been sitting in the sick bay this morning after feeling fluey since Monday. Only one run so far this week but hoping to be OK for parkrun on Saturday 🤞Love Reading everyone's weather experiences. Haven't done snow yet but it's a possibility. Ice is a definite no-no with 2 hip replacements! Thank you for your catch up Oldfloss. Hopefully I'll have more to report next week.

So good to see you here. even with a bug xx

I think you do well to rest up and let the bug pass... hopefully by Saturday you will feel much better. There are so many bugs flying around right now... 'tis the season!

Snow, in the right location can be fun... ice is a real no no... I fell once... Christmas Eve... not running... landed on my coccyx and it was agony. We celebrated Christmas proper in January, when I felt better!

Just take care of you and until then , sit a while x

Hello once again, I hope I'm not too late for those very tempting homemade ginger biscuits. I've been seriously thinking about what to wear for the changing running conditions and have already invested in some new gear. The latest addition is socks! One of my posts about running in the rain developed into a conversation about socks and recommendations for such socks. So now, for the winter, I've invested in some merino wool ones. I get cold feet, so I'm convinced they'll be worth it. I'll be trying them out very soon no doubt. I've also been thinking about lights, having got caught out in advancing fog and wondering how visible I really was out on the lanes. Happy running everyone 🏃‍♂️

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply toSax64

A fresh batch this morning and I have the fire crackling away as the temperature has dropped this morning. The corner is warm and we welcome you!

Socks... yes! Thank you so much for reminding me...I need new winter socks! Your choice sound incredibly super!!! I really hope that they keep your cold feet warmer... your rain runs are awesome!

I have little lights on my shoes.. front tags and back... my lightweight rain jacket has a high viz flash and I do have a head light for really dark movements...I rarely use that though, as I tend to run a tad later in the morning, these days. Visibility and safety are paramount and we have had many posts about this in the past.

Thank you for popping in and do rest with us a while longer... let us know how those socks work please:)

These are the socks, reduced in price this month. 33% merino wool.

Hello and I'll sit, but not for long, I seem to have found my bounce again, it'll be nice when my new glasses arrive though, but for now I'm full of enthusiasm and finding there is joy on this path I'm now following, yes it was a wet run yesterday, today has been beautiful, I'm hoping tomorrow will only be drizzle as although I felt ok in the rain I'd prefer dry running weather. A little news, I'm going away in a couple of weeks and planning some different runs in different places.

This is a lovely corner to catch up, thank you Floss xx

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply toSueAppleRun

Hello! It is really good to see you here...you have a cushion waiting!

You certainly have found your bounce again! That is so wonderful! That you have found the joy again is probably the best thing! You have been running in all weathers these last months and the rain certainly did not put you off at all!

Your trip away sounds very exciting and the fact that you are going to be running ion different locations and places! I cannot wait for your posts.

Just rest a while before setting off again, and know how thrilled I am and how thrilled we all are that you are continuing to move forward, with a lighter step and with joy in your heart. Thank you for popping in xxx

Hi Oldfloss and running friends!

I’m continuing with my short runs, following the ‘5K plan’ on the Nike Run Club app. All is going well so far but I’m taking my time as I’m still recovering from my heart attack and cardiac arrest in April 2023.

I’ve also heard today that my application to volunteer at the cardiac rehab sessions ❤️💪 has been successful, so I start in early December 2023! I’m really looking forward to giving something back for all the help they’ve given me with my recovery.

Good luck everyone with your runs! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️👍

Hi David... so good to see you!

Those short runs are just the ticket and you, are being so, so sensible....getting there, but sweetly and safely too.

That is fantastic news re-your volunteering! Just perfect and you will have December to get into it and be all ready for the New Year and a new beginning for you and for the many folk whom you will be leading the way to new and better health !

Just great.... thank you so much for popping in!

Hello Floss 🙂. The winter kit has had an airing over the last week! 6C isn’t the coldest temperature I have run in, but it is certainly cold enough to require a change of wardrobe. So, running bottoms (not too thick), shorts with phone pocket, technical base layer, running shirt and a zip up top ( which can be taken off and tied around the waist if I get too hot). Then there is a bobble hat to keep my ears warm (it doesn’t fly off in the wind of course), gloves and thick injinji socks…and not forgetting a neck gaiter.

I run the first 1k really slowly in cold weather (thanks Coach Bennett); muscle pulls are more likely in the cold. I have decided to slow things down generally this winter; I do seem to be more injury prone when the weather turns. I think my 15 minute hot water bottle warm up of my knees immediately pre run is probably even more important at this time of year.

Ground conditions? Fresh snow on trails is fun, compacted snow or ice is a definite no go for me. Forget pace and just concentrate on staying upright is going to be my mantra until Spring appears! Happy winter running all.

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply toBeachcomber66

Hello and welcome! You sound as if you are well prepared for the colder runs! I am equally geared up on those cold days... my hat and my buff and gloves for me are essential!

That is a really good point about that first 1K, being slower. Warming up the muscles is really important and taking it gently is a great plan. I love the idea of warming up your knees too...with a hot water bottle!

You have got exactly the right idea... soft fresh snow... fun and a really experience to run in... and yes... hard snow or ice... it is not a plan!!!

I am hoping the friends who pop in here, read this... it says a lot... and will help folk stay warm, stay running and stay safe too ! Stick around ! x

I’m here, popping in to say hello!

Reading all the posts about everybody’s awesome runs and the progress of newbie runners is making me yearn to get my trainers on and go start C25K again!

I think I might be ready real soon to get back out there! I have a sense of excitement every time I think about it…that can only be a good thing, right?!

But for now, I’ll grab a cushion and get comfy with a hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows and a wee snack.

Thank you for a lovely post Oldfloss 🥰 xxx

Hello Floss and all, just popping in for a cappuccino and a piece of your gorgeous Bakewell tart. I’ve never known such a wet November. Every time it rains it is torrential so I make no excuses for staying indoors on those days and do an exercise session instead. We have another storm coming on Saturday so I may even stay in bed on parkrun day. 😱. Our new start/finish is on the beach and so exposed in those 40 mph winds.

My shorts and vests are packed away and the long leggings and capris are out, but it really is so mild that my running gloves haven’t been needed yet. I’ve got layers of different thicknesses at the ready and my running jacket has a flashing light on the back. I don’t run in the dark much but love my long sleeve proviz top with reflective sleeves. When it gets chilly I’ll wear a buff round my neck too.

Have a good weekend everyone.

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply toDexy5

Hello. Hope you enjoyed the Bakewell Tart! If the rain is torrential, for me anyway, the joy gets dampened... so your indoor exercise sounds perfect to me...

Another storm... ! Gosh yes, do stay in bed! I cannot imagine running on those winds!

You have got the gear all ready and are prepared for the weather to come.. I packed my summer stuff away too! But it is bitter cold here yesterday and today!

Sit with us a while longer and do stay warm and safe too ...thank you for popping in! x

Hi Floss, I’m a bit late this week.

It has been a miserable week for me and I definitely used the torrential rain as a good excuse not to run on Monday and Wednesday this week, and felt totally disoriented by the change to my regular routine. But I did get out there this morning and managed 6.5 (Strava) or 7k (Garmin) so I’ll count that as a win then, however far it actually was!

I’ve found my Garmin watch has failed to find where in the country I am for the last couple of weeks and have no idea why that should be, when it was always previously able to at least see and record my general whereabouts. I expect I’ve pushed a button I shouldn’t have at some point…..

I’ve been looking at the NRC runs and they look ideal for my next stage, but I can’t seem to get it to work on my iphone. It seems to want me to select my music source, but as I don’t have one, or want one (especially when running), it gives up on me totally and I end up with a timer going but no audio support. I expect it’s that wrong button again…..

Maybe I should just keep running without all the tech, but I quite like to keep some sort of record. Whatever did we do before all these gadgets to keep us company!

Cappuccino and ginger biscuits over in the corner, for me please.

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66Graduate in reply toBarbieW

NRC works well on my iPhone BarbieW. I just dowloaded the free app and that was that. It does ask me about music but I just ignore it.Definitely worth persisting.

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply toBarbieW

Hope you got the Cappuccino and the biscuits...Sorry I am so late here!

You have had a time of it...but you got out! Well done to you!! Technology is great... until it plays its own game!!!

We know where you are... you are here... in the corner!! Not sure why the NRC runs are not working though... maybe sit a while on the cushions here, rest up and press a few more buttons? xxx

Dexy5 profile image
Dexy5Graduate in reply toBarbieW

it might be worth trying switching your watch off and then on again BarbieW , it might get your location sorted again. Ignore the music load as I think that relates to NRC music. I play my own on my phone and the guided run cuts in and out correctly, but if you don’t want music it should still talk to you if you have blue toothed your phone and earphones.
