There's lots of advice about running, trainers and knees. Firstly as we get older we may need an extra day rest from running , go for a walk or swim instead on rest days, it takes time to build the muscles and bones to run. Also week 4 is a bit of a jump up in running time.

It's definitely worth finding a running shop and getting a gait analysis, they will tell you the type of trainers that are best suited to you. I went to an orthotics guy and he made me special insoles, all my knee pain vanished within a few days.

Also if it's painful then take it to your doctor, we aren't medically trained so a doctor or sports physio is the best person to advise you.

Good luck and enjoy your running journey.

Yes I’ve been told a few times now to get my feet fitted with the correct trainers. Im going to go back to walking for a while too. Plus swim more 😊 thanks for the info 👍

I'm returning from an illness back last summer that put me in hospital twice and stole all my fitness, I'm walking loads and my fitness is returning, also the muscle tone on my legs is getting better too. I mostly walk but run a little here and there, I love to run but can't keep going like I used to.Walking is great, swimming too, and you may return to running.

Whatever you do, have fun, life's too short not to

Knees often hurt during C25K, the most important thing is to find out why. It could be your shoes or it could be arthritis, something structural or the muscles supporting the knee being weak. There are probably other reasons too. I'm not a doctor so can't comment on what the reason is for your pain. Please see your doctor to rule out any underlying reasons for the pain. Take your running shoes with you. If they are old and worn they might be causing your troubles.

Knees are a very complex structure and running adds to the stresses they carry. Running can be really helpful for them but you must ensure you deal with pain quickly rather than trying to carry on and causing real damage. A doctor can give you the advice you need, not a bunch of well meaning people on the internet.

While you wait for your appointment make sure you rest, raising your legs. Ice packs can help as can compression bandages. If the pain stops you sleeping, painkillers at bedtime can help.

Look after your knees and they will astound you (speaking as a 60+ woman with an arthritic knee who's been running for 4 years and loving it 😁)

You have had the advice... support from those in the know and then at least you have a starting point. Those knees are so important and there are exercises to help strengthen, but only when you find out what the cause of the discomfort is.

Not a great idea to cause more damage. Keep us posted please:)

I saw a chiropractor as the knee pain made me think I was doing more harm than good. Fast forward ultrasounds and examinations and unsurprisingly at 62 I had arthritis and coupled with far too much weight (he told me this very politely) it was a starting point for doing something about it. I had a few treatments to help the surrounding muscles and followed the exercises religiously and shed 4 stone and the problem resolved. Running and the exercises have built up muscle to support my knee which has made a huge difference. I guess the load you carry on the joint is also crucial. Over the last year I put on a stone and I really felt it in my joints. I’ve lost to it again and the pain is greatly improved. I wear Nike trail runners which are really comfy. I do run outside and try to head for soft ground when I can but therein lurks possible disaster traps like rabbit holes, tree roots and dog poo. Life is never simple

Hi there. We're the same age, and we have similar problems! I actually have niggles in my toes, knees, hips and back, caused by hypermobility, arthritis and tendonitis. (Gosh I sound decrepit! 😂) I graduated in October but some pains I was having in my glutes got a bit worse so I've been treadmill running for the last few months and always wear a knee support, and things are definitely getting better so I hope to be back outside soon - this running thing has been amazing for me in so many ways and I DO NOT want to stop! You've had some great advice here, but just to add, the key for me is getting proper diagnoses and then adapting things accordingly - so please try to do the same, take care, and good luck to you 🍀

I had a lot of pain in my knees from jogging and walking. It got to the point where I could hardly kneel. Turns out it was tightness in my muscles. I had a couple of sports deep muscle pummelling (it hurt a lot!!!!) but viola. It worked. May be worth checking out. Good luck.
