NO C25K

Our son didn't do C25K, instead, as a running-hater, but former very-good-rower, decided to enter a 5K charity event. He started far more quickly that wise counsel would suggest, but he kept at it. Last time he visited, he did a local 5.2k from our house, which involves a pretty steep climb and it was hot - he came back about 22 mins later saying he didn't really try too hard! The little so-and-so.

He sent me a message yesterday. On Sunday he popped out for a run, and ended up doing 13.1 miles - a half marathon distance to a local nature reserve and back again. To clarify, he did 13.1 in total, not each way... he isn't superman after all.

He stopped rowing [double, quad and the occasional 8] pre-uni, and he is now three year post, and didn't take any real activity beyond walking in the intervening period. It just goes to show what we can achieve when we put our mind to it.

Good luck to all and every runner on here, be you a newbie or an experienced graduate. Keep going, and be thankful for the cooler summer and the approaching autumn.

PS. My lateral co-lateral ligament is finally starting to feel more secure so, with any ordinary luck, I shall be out doing some pre-starting-running brisk walking soon and then very tentative slow running by autumn. Please, get down onto your knees and pray to which ever God you worship and ask for my knee to get better - I have to try and keep up with our son, and I need divine assistance! I really need it!!

🍏 So good to hear your knee is healing Nick & even more pleased to hear that you will start back slowly by walking and then ease back into running! Once strengthened you will be as good as new! 🀣 Not sure you will ever keep up with superman. We can always live in hope!

Thanks, but as good as new... I have my doubts. As long as I can get back out and start running along with my dearly missed hill walking, I shall be happy. I will never keep up with our son - I never have and I never will, but that's the joy of being a parent, watching the events without having to put in the effort I did when I was young!

Indeed its is, and it is so good to see after witnessing so many 'pass through my hands as a Scout leader' who were anything but. Mind you, we do now have a few Mountain Leader qualified one to make up for it.

Healing slowly, and it shows how disappointingly accurate the senior nurse was when he said, 'Age is not on your side, my friend,' when I went into hospital. I was only 59 at the time!!

Sounds like you've got a sensible plan to get to the starting line of C25K. Will you be seeing your health professional to confirm you're set to go?

Best of luck!

Thanks, and I shan't be as the consultant said I only need seek further advice if it drags on, or if it hurts. As long as I follow my own advice and 'listen to my body', I should [hopefully!] be OK.

If it hurts or feels loose, I walk or stop and I revert to even more reading, and even more frustration at being able to look at over the moor, and not being able to get out on to it.

Sounds like you've already got their advice and made it your own! Slow and steady and listen to your body...or specifically lateral collateral...

Keep us posted!!!

I shall, and I will start with brisk walks to gain confidence in the knee... oh, how silly I was - the gate was unlocked all along!
