Consistency, stretching, and rest days are my recommendations. I find the stretching to be particularly important as I used to have terrible shin splints and this time round (touch wood) not so much.

Slow and steady is still the mantra for me... and it works. Many of us have repeated the programme and it is so good... we just go with each run, each week, and I think as far as some exercise on non-run days... you are getting plenty in !
