I graduated for the 2nd time in August 2023 but for various health reasons (including a Pacemaker fitted in December of that year) I've lapsed. I walk a lot, 2 active dogs see to that, and usually achieve 1 or 2 active 10s a day. I also use the gym weight machines and attend cardio rehab circuit training sessions so I'm reasonably fit for a 73 year old bloke even though 25kgs overweight.
The previous times I've graduated I used a treadmill at the local gym. I want to start again but really fancy doing it outdoors but have some trepidation. Does anyone have any tips for getting started?

🍏Hi Stewie that’s a good amount of daily exercise which will really help your running! Why don’t you go for a wee exploratory run. Do a five minute warm up walk, then transition into a SLOW run & just enjoy it.. time and distance don’t matter for the moment.. and build back from there. You could use couch again if it would help you. The free Nike Run Club have guided runs from 10 mins you could try out too. Have a go and come back to us and tell us how it went!
Well done on your regular exercise. I agree with AA. Don't bother with a specific run in mind, but do set a specific appointment to get out the door...
I find if I can put aside work, surfing, and other distractions and get out the door, then the majority of the battle is won!!
And do go back to C25K as you need like. I'm going out for a 30 minute run tomorrow and I think I'm going to use the app for Week 9 just for Steve's motivation!!
Hi Stewie, definitely a good idea to run outside.. so much better than the boring treadmill. I feel like you’ll be much more likely to keep up with regular running outside in the fresh air, because it’s fun! I would say, to start with, find a level route if you can so it’s not such a change from the treadmill. Here the best level paved running route would be along the seafront, early morning or evening to avoid the crowds, but my preferred routes are softer and unpaved along an old railway line or on forest tracks. You will know where is best local to you from your dog walking. Also, take it very slowly.. tripping hazards outside. You don’t want an injury. Once you’ve gained confidence running outside you’ll be able to explore more challenging routes.. enjoy!
