Any advice?

I am revising C25K and have reached Wk2 run 3. I am being careful not to run too fast and it’s felt good until this last run where I could really feel it in my shins. I don’t want this to become a thing as I know how painful shin splints can be. I was surprised that it even happened at this early stage so what I am doing wrong?

I’m running on a treadmill, could that be a factor? Any help appreciated

make sure you have appropriate footwear, keep hydrated all of the time (not just running days, run as slowly as you need to and do some strength exercise on non running days,

Good luck!

That’s really interesting, stay hydrated even on non running days-I didn’t know that. I will try it. Again I’m hearing slow down, I will do that too. Thank you for your reply

🍏Good advice from  Hidden I will post you a link about running on treadmills. Please don’t run with pain. Take an extra rest day and see your GP /physio if the pain continues.

Hi Glanestpink, I really don't know much about shin splints or treadmill running or anything, really. But what I've observed in my own case is that as long as I run/jog (slowly) on unpaved trails, I'm fine. The moment I try running even for just 20 minutes on a road/asphalted/regular flat surface, I end up with all sorts of niggles in my feet, my knees (always my warning sign to back off and take it easy), my ankles etc. For me at least, I need the constant variation in terrain, making each footfall different from the next, to avoid repetitive strain/injury. Since you are using a treadmill, maybe it's something similar for you? (Did you use a treadmill last time you did the program too?)

Hi Trailslogg,

Last time I did the whole programme running on grass, once I’d graduated I ventured onto roads and immediately ended up with shin splints, super painful. In that case it definitely was something to do with terrain, I had become so used to running on grass everything else hurt. I thought this time the treadmill was a good idea, not as soft as grass but not as hard as tarmac but last week the pains I felt were very much like the beginning of shin splints and i definitely don’t want to go there again. Maybe I need to slow down even more than I have already? Maybe I need to go outside and try something else too. So difficult to know what to do for the best. Thank you for your reply, really appreciate it.
