Ding Ding…Round Three.

I’m not sure if there is anyone out there that remembers me…or is prepared to admit it…but after a 12 month gap I am lacing up my shoes again. I graduated C25k six years ago and went on to graduate 10k aged 60 ish. I made some good friends on here and had great support. However a central ruke of my life is that things going well always precedes a disaster…I’m a bit like the UK Economy. In 2019 I got very ill, very quickly, due to a tumour beating up my pituitary gland and robbing me of the ‘ormones we need to function. Twas a bit scary. Surgery and replacement hormone therapy put me back on track…but only for a short time as a post operative infection made a bit of a mess of my brain and optic nerves. Twas extremely scary. More surgery and three months of IV antibiotics put me back on track again. I’d lost most of my sight and that took a year or so to return….it’s pretty good now, good enough to drive again…hooray. Never thought I’d miss traffic jams. Anyway, last January I felt well enough to dip my toes in the C25K pool again. It was going really well when, as per the rule of my life outlined above, I injured my left knee quite badly. This had nothing to do with running: I fell off a chair…sober I might add as I can’t drink any more. I hobbled around for a day until the pain pushed me to a sports physio…a good one. I’d somehow managed to tear my MCL and part tear my ACL…my meniscus was already on borrowed time after a lifetime of sport and farming. After all the surgery I’ve had in recent years I didnt want to go down that road so embarked on what has been a year of rehab. Its been hard but I am in a good place now and am back to vigorous activity, cycling etc….legs stronger than in years. I’ve learned an awful lot about how my leg works…or rather, how it might if I was fifty years younger and hadn’t abused it as I have. So, being a stubborn old fool, I thought I’d see if I could shuffle along a bit as variety to my other training. I’m using a treadmill this time, for now anyway, to ease my joints into the old routine. It might well be beyond me…we’ll see…I’ve got a few more miles on the clock now and have bounced back so many times I feel like a squash ball (same hairstyle too) but I’ll take it steady and have fun. Week one was pretty easy so a good start. The game is afoot!

OMG you have been through the mill. Good to hear that things have got better - it does indeed sound a scary time.I can echo a tiny part of your journey, the last bit, my knee has been giving me some problems and I have started strength exercises and at the moment only running on a treadmill. I do need to add in some stretch exercises which my physio gave me a while back.

I think the treadmill is a good idea for recovery as it is more predictable and stopping is easier if you need to without the hobble home!

Good luck with your journey revisited 👍

The game is indeed a 'foot ! And... you are back on the trail, for fitness and health again, by the sound of it!

I am still here of course, and the mantra still is, for me and many of us, slow and steady. Many of us, also, are or have repeated C25K again,

It is like a familiar friend, but it may be an idea just to refresh your memory with a quick look at the How to Run C25K post, again?

Do take a peek at the Strength and flex forum too, loads of new ideas there to support you and your running body!

Good to see you here... we look forward to watching your progress !

What an amazing, positive, post. I am so glad that you are sufficiently recovered to add in C25K to your routine and wish you all the very best on graduating once agian. There are some extra runs now for graduates, so you get a Brucie bonus at the end 😀

Good grief, you've had a lot to deal with! You are clearly a very determined and reslilient person so C25K will be no problem. Good luck to you, I'm looking forward to seeing your post saying you did it!
