I have been running since 1981, but very very intermittently till 2023 when I took it seriously at 74 for the first time since I started. I am active and not overweight and a regular gym user but had been with no fixed purpose.
Until I heard about NHS Couch to 5K which I completed in June 2023 in the gym on a treadmill. I have run 70 times since then and not got injured...or improved much.
My goal is to keep running and enjoy it (I never have enjoyed running, just after endorphin rush afterwards), and do it all effortlessly in Zone2 - another crush I have, but that's a different story.
Today in February 2024 I have a personal trainer, a current ultra marathon runner in his later 40s, who is getting me to do functional training, which I believe is giving me a stronger and more stable base which I combine with my regular cardio, and occasional speed work.
So for me running is a process, a necessary process with the goal being "to love and trust the process", and I have never felt better as a result. But there are no guarantees with taking up running, just a risk reduction of all injuries and mortality. That should be a great incentive, and it is for me.
