Hope you are all keeping well and enjoying your running journeys.
Another update on my running or lack of running journey. As some of you know I have occasional flare ups of sciatica . Some mild and some where it can take me 20 mins to walk from one side of the kitchen to the other.
When Sciatica strikes the running immediately stops as it should. Unfortunately it’s been more a frequent unwelcome visitor over the past 6 months or more. Not constant but on and off enough to stop me restarting C25K.
I saw a fellow runner mum on the school run the other day. She saw me in my leggings and trainers and asked if I was off for a run.
I wish was my reply and explained the horrible ‘S’ word as the cause. I told her I think it’s time to stop running permanently. I don’t want to J said but I’ve got to think of what is right for my back.
She told my to go see a physiotherapist on the good old NHS. She had back problems too though not Sciatica but the physio sorted her out. So I thought why not, what can I lose.
As some of you already know I’ve previously seen an Osteopath who was very good but I can no longer afford. I’m going to sign up for physio and lay all my cards on the table and see what they recommend.
I would be so sad to give up running especially with all the good it does for my mental health. But as well as listening to my body, I need the professional advice on whether running is really right for me physically. This in my opinion is my last shot 🤞🏻.
Have a lovely weekend everyone and happy running!

Hello! Been a while 😂 I've popped on here this morning hoping to inspire myself to run again after about a year of sitting on my behind... Works been nuts, never know where I am from one day to the next but I know that's just an excuse I'm using in the long term. Want to try to get back to fitness before 90s Fest in August 🤣 got up early this morning but couldn't get myself out of the door🤦🏼♂️
I figured a visit to the place that got me moving in the first place would be a good start and yours was first message I saw.
Sorry to hear your still struggling with your health, must be incredibly frustrating and I hope this last shot gets you sorted out 🤞🏻 you'd be out running if you could and I'm not bothering because I'm a bit busy 🤦🏼♂️
I hope otherwise your well, gonna dive into the forums and see if there's more familiar faces around 👍🏻
RR! So lovely to hear from you! I wondered where you had gone. Thought you might be injured, glad you are ok!
Thank you for your kind words. I’m missing running so much but also like you life has been mega busy and feel like I’m running (bad choice of word 😫😂) from one thing from the next without a break). Pretty burn out to be honest. So I can totally understand if you are finding it hard to fit a regular run schedule in. Don’t be too hard on yourself eh! You will get back to it and the fact you are thinking about it is a good start.
I was going to delete this account a week ago and not bother posting but it’s folk on here (like your self) that I enjoy hearing from. So I’m staying 😀.
I’m going to have to see who is in the 90s fest line up, you have me intrigued! 🤣
All the best getting back to running and look forward to reading it 👌🏻👍
hi Indielass00 ..so sorry to hear that you’re still struggling with your back…luckily it’s something I have only ever experienced once before and I remember it well, I could not move for 3 days..I can sympathise 100% with you…
Although I know you don’t want to give up the running side of your life so I am keeping everything crossed for good news when you go see the physiotherapist x
Thank you Mummycav . If I have to stop I will accept it. I used to run in my teens and 20s. So it’s not like it was new to me when I started 2 and a half years ago. At least I managed a few 5ks back then. Unfortunately I haven’t been so lucky in my 40s. It’s worth seeing the physio for sure but I’m going in with an open mind. What will be will be. Thanks for your kind words xx
Sorry you ate still struggling with your back. It can't hurt to try the physio.IMHO they tend to have a more holistic approach and it certainly did the trick for me when, after several weeks of osteopathy, I was beginning to wonder if I'd ever walk upright again let alone run.The osteopath got me mobile again initially, but was of limited help beyond that.
Good luck, and I hope you don't have to wait too long for an appointment
Thanks Birdlady64 . It’s worth a try! I have heard the waiting list is long but I’m happy walking my dog at the moment. Hopefully as the saying goes “All good things come to those who wait”!
I hope you are keeping well. I hardly get on here these days as the little ones and puppy keeping me busy. I’m sure you are doing brilliantly with the running! 😀
I'm still running but not quite so regularly, currently trying to work my distance back up again. To echo what's been said elsewhere I'm also trying Pilates to keep the back niggles in check so might be worth a try
Thanks. Yes I love Pilates and need to get back into doing it. Life has just been crazy busy with kids and job hunting taking centre stage. Thanks for your advice 🙏
I also get spells of low back pain and hip pain, occasionally had sciatica, and I know the frustration of it disrupting attempts to run. A few years ago I saw a physio privately and she gave me Pilates exercises to do which have really helped. She didn’t suggest follow up appointments with her and I have only gone back to her a couple of times when I’ve had new problems. So it hasn’t been costly. I attend a Pilates class she runs so I know the exercises will be okay for me.
So for me Pilates has been great. There is an nhs video I have used occasionally and has some good exercises youtu.be/zVjKoDJT8pc
May be worth a look. Very good luck with your search for help.
Thanks NicecupOT . It’s is a sad decision and not an easy one. As I started running in my teens and been a useful tool when things are tough . But if physio says I can conquer this I will. It’s just I have been injured more than actual since I started the program 2 and a half years ago. So you can see situation I’m in . I’m ok though thanks for asking 🙏
I was wondering where you were! It’s very important you get the right advice before you start running again as you don’t want to make the situation worse for yourself.
I haven’t been running for a while tbh, but still enjoy walking regularly in the beautiful country side of North Wales.
Good luck & I hope you get to sort out the sciatica soon🤞😘
Thanks lovely. In lockdown I could regularly come on here post and read loads of posts. Now life has returned to normal I rarely get chance to get on the forum. I miss it but my children are 4 and 9 years old, so I’m enjoying having the time with them whilst they want me! 😀😂
I’m glad you are having lovely walks. I am too. I’m out a lot with the dog which is the best natural medicine for my Sciatica 😀
Sorry to hear about your back problem, like others have said, it will be sad to give up running, hope the physio can help. 🤞 I'm still running 🏃♂️ no big distances, sometimes just one a week, just glad i'm still able to get out there, anyway, good luck with the physio! 🤞
Cheers Peter. I will see what Physio says. If they agree that my back issues are aggravated by running I will stop. As that is my main concern. I will just find another form of fitness I can do if that is the case. Glad you are still running 😀👍
Thank you! It’s coming up to ten years since my first introduction to Sciatica whilst pregnant with my first baby.
I’m hoping they don’t tell me to pack it in , but if they advise other exercise avenues I will take that on board. Tbh I’m not about distance. It’s more about the experience and how it makes me feel that matters in regards to running.
Always appreciate that you and others on here have noted my determination! 😀👍 x
I missed this and I apologise... I was so wrapped up with my forthcoming 10K race on Sunday.
It is so, so good to see you back here with us... you have been missed... You have had a very tough time...Sciatica is draining and absolutely horrendously painful.
I am really hoping that you are going to find some respite.
So... see the physio and see what is what? You are strong, you are determined. Past posts have shown that many times...
You will know where you move onto after that... I shall be hoping that everything is positive...x
PS
Did give you this link... when I trapped my sciatic nerve, a few years ago, twisting , whilst holding small runner in training.. ,, it provided almost instant relief... I used it then and if I feel any twinges I use it now..
Thank you so much Oldfloss for your lovely supportive message. No need to apologise about missing my post, it’s easily done and I haven’t been on here for four months or so.
I’ve felt rather sad at times without running and miss it like an old friend I haven’t seen for some time. But I’ve also managed to focus on all the other positive things that I have; my family, puppy, sunrise and the fact I live ten minutes away from the 🌊. I go on some wonderful walks with such beauty around me and I feel so blessed for all I have.
To see a physio gives me hope. So I’m still hanging on in there . I love this forum as there are so many kind and warm people on here like yourself. Thanks for the video, I will definitely check it out and all the best for your 10K 👍💪🏻😀xx
My race went very well it was Sunday! We had a lot of fun with friends from the forum all meeting up there!
Positivity is the thing and can certainly allow is to move on. You have a wonderful location as you say and the joys of family and friends, Walking too... sheer joy, with such beauty all around, and we do have some great little walking themes and challenges on our own Active 10 ! The April challenge... Walk with your Ears..,hmm, maybe worth taking a look. I pop across there when I get chance. So many of us do head across there every now and again and folk are very welcoming
