Hi, I recently got some new ASICS trainers. When they arrived they fit pretty perfectly (UK 4) however I read on their website they recommend having a thumbs width at the end of your toes to avoid impact when running downhill etc. I have since ordered a 4.5 which give a tiny bit more room at the toe but now the rest of the shoe fit feels weird? Like slight slipping on the heel/loose around the sides. Now I don’t know which is best! Any advice? Thank you

ASICS advice
What sort of socks are you wearing? If you're wearing thicker athletics type socks they might take up the extra room?
Maybe try lacing the bigger shoes up tighter so that your instep area is held firm while your toes have room to spread out?
Your feet will swell while you run and there's nothing worse than badly fitting shoes which can either be too big or too small. Have you got a friend who's done a bit of running who can have a look and try and work it out?
I'm guessing you bought your shoes online which might show you why so many of us prefer to buy our shoes from a real life specialist running shop. You can try on lots of different manufacturers and styles and find out what really suits you best. It's not necessarily an expensive option as you 'buy once, buy the right thing'.
The last reply hit the nail on the head so to speak. You are best buying from a running shop who will be able to advise and let you try various pairs out in a treadmill.
I favour ASICS after going through various other brands, however my current pair are a full size bigger than my normal shoes and I have the similar issue of them feeling a little sloppy, although this clears after a couple of km’s.
How far through the program are you? And do you have the right support for your feet?
Hi lucypc25k , as already mentioned, it's better to err on the side of slightly too large than slightly too small.
There's a variety of ways to lace your shoes, including "heel-lock lacing" to hold your heel in place more firmly. See here: asics.com/nz/en-nz/mk/choos... I have wide feet and a high instep so for me those techniques work better than simply tying more tightly, which gives me tingly, painful feet.
It does sound like you'd benefit from advice from a specialist running shop. You'll also find lots of tips in this post: healthunlocked.com/couchto5...
Hope you can find the right shoes for you!
Wow thank you Cmoi for the link to the Asics page for laces typing techniques, really useful information.
i wear Asics and all of my pairs are a half size up to what i usually wear, i do tie the laces pretty tight, but have good room in the toe box area, maybe use the 2 holes at the top and tie the laces there?
What Cmoi suggested re the extra two holes on the trainers, I use that method for all my trainers, it also prevents blisters because it stops the slipping.
Also, I purchased a pair of ASICS Novablast 2 last year and they were a size too big for me (special offer, couldn't resist), they felt fine but all the nails apart from my big toes went black and fell off. I wasn't sure what the cause was at the time and had already moved onto other shoes until I went back to them a few months after and the toenails went black and fell off again.
