Hello first time posting

I’ve been running for around 18 months now three times a week and 4-5k at a time I haven’t missed a week I’m 49 years old and have a job as a phlebotomist

On Wednesday I got out of bed with a stiff bottom of my back middle area and I thought a little run might loosen it but I couldn’t hardly walk after around 5 mins so sauntered back home where I rested and walked to keep it mobile for two days

The Dr has given me naproxen and diazepam which I have taken for three days with diazepam I have only taken today as the pain was bad, it has helped but won’t be taking it for no longer than a week as the effects don’t agree with me long term

I was wondering what could had caused this and has anyone else had this problem and how long did you wait before you started running again as I’m scared I’m going to loose my fitness level

Thanks for reading

Oh no! Sending masses of sympathy your way. That sounds utterly miserable. It’s never a good plan to run in pain so I’d stay away from the running shoes until this is resolved, and ideally you’ve got some explanation for what’s caused this. I totally get why you’d be worried about losing fitness but it’s best to be cautious and not potentially make anything worse.

Did the doctor who saw you have any suggestions? I think this sounds like the sort of problem where you really need a detailed discussion with someone in real life who can examine you. Perhaps a physio or your GP.

Really hope it settles down soon.

I have no idea why it has happened apart from I changed my trainers about two weeks ago and chucked away my faithful cherished running shoes as I had done far too many miles in them and thought it would be better to

The GP thinks I have pulled a muscle which is spasming at the base of my spine but didn’t think it was a slipped disc but if the medication didn’t help I was to go back this week

It’s painful and I can’t work either as it’s too painful to bend to take blood

See how it goes. Keep following the medical advice you’ve been given. Hopefully you’ll know where you are in a week or two. It’s frustrating sometimes having to be patient and trying to get answers. Sending best wishes while you’re on the injury couch. ❤️

So sorry to hear this !I can only echo the advice given by MissUnderstanding

Certainly do not run in pain.

Unfortunately no one here could possibly suggest what caused it or how long it may take to run again.

Your GP or a sports physio may be your best bet .

None of us like to lose our hard gained fitnessdue to injury or illness but it's crucial to get these things resolved first.

Good luck 🤞

That sounds horrid Dilly74 , sending sympathy.

While I can't possibly offer any sort of diagnosis, I can reassure you that a break from running of up to a fortnight is unlikely to affect your fitness significantly. So please don't go rushing back into things, there's no need to.

Wishing you a speedy recovery!

I get that periodically caused by my dodgy knees. A sports massage from a deep tissue masseur sorts it out. Can cost up to about £50 for 50 minutes but I can usually get it done for £35. Agree with other posters though, see someone about it and get it assessed professionally👍
