Starting again after long break

Completed c25k in June 21 and was building to 10k when I fell while running in Nov 21. I struggled to get back into running and though I managed a few 35 min runs in early 2022, I couldn’t summon the motivation to progress further and then the habit disappeared.

Recently, I have found myself watching runners with envy and realised that I actually miss it!

I want my previous fitness level back and I want to reach that elusive 10k!

1 Jan 2023 I restarted at week 3 run 1. I’m happy it was the right level to rejoin as though I haven’t been running, I do a lot of walking. I’ve now also done run 2 and looking forward to the next. It feels good to be back out there!

You’ve been busy! Great to hear you managed your 10k! I’m getting impatient already! So want to get back to 5k and summer morning running 😁.

Thanks Katnap. I figure that as I started early, I’ll have more opportunity to build on my runs during the summer, so fingers crossed I’ll get 10k this year. 🤞😁

Wishing you loads of luck with your return. It’s so great when you’ve broken your streak of not running and got out there again. Good on you! That first run in a long while is almost harder than the first one you ever do. You should be seriously proud of yourself.

Take it steady and celebrate all runs you’re doing. Once you’ve graduated and consolidated, see how you feel about what you want to do next. There’s no pressure to keep “progressing”. You might find that running for half an hour is what you enjoy most and is what fits with everything else in your life, or what works best just for now. If or when you did decide to work up slowly to 10k, there’s brilliant support over on bridge to 10k. I’ve found the Nike run club app really helpful in keeping me going both when I’m just ticking over and also when I’ve been building distance.

Really good luck to you! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

Thanks for the encouragement MissUnderstanding. I hope you are now fully recovered from your own injuries. I was making good headway on the magic plan last time around, so my target is to complete it this time. I think I’ll spend more time consolidating though before I move on to it. Runnng ahead of myself 😂, first I need to get to the end of week 9!

Oh I’m exactly the same with running ahead of myself! I definitely wouldn’t recommend this but I booked a 10k race after coming home from a particularly good c25k run, and then did exactly the same for a half marathon while I was doing magic plan. Now I ask my husband to hide my phone when I’ve had a good run so I don’t impulse book things!!! I’ve been lucky and it’s worked out (I was sensible with having proper time to build up) and I’ve found those events very motivating to keep going but it’s only more recently that I’ve appreciated how nice it is just to run for the fun of it without a “what’s next…” mindset.

I’m nearly there with the injuries, thanks. I’m back to running shorter distances regularly which is brilliant. There’s nothing like not being able to run at all to make you appreciate being able to get out there. Putting on a sports bra is still the worst thing, although it was still pretty hard without wrist sprains!!
