I’m struggling on this one too, I’ve completed W5R1 three times now and my husband said move on once you are really confident on the one you’ve completed. I’m not so I will just have to keep repeating till I feel I’ve got three more minutes in the tank. Hopefully it will appear so or I’ll be stuck forever.he’s says it’s mind over matter but he’s an accomplished runner, this is my first venture at any exercise other than walking.
I’m not sure I totally agree with your husband. I think you sometimes don’t know you’ve got three minutes extra “in the tank” until you try it.
You’ll have skills now to slow down and take it really easy to keep going for the extra time. In your position, I’d just give it a go. Wait for a cool time of day and see how you get on. It would be a shame to be stuck on a run you’ve actually completed getting more and more frustrated. What will you lose by doing that next run?
Edit: I’ve just read that back and I really hope the tone has come across as supportive. It sounds like you’re doing absolutely brilliantly and it would be rubbish to let that positivity go feeling stuck on a run that you’ve successfully completed. You did it! Don’t knock yourself down.
I definitely agree with MissUnderstanding that you don't know until you try sometimes. And note that it's not 3 extra minutes, it's only 1 really: you have been doing 3 x 5 minutes = 15, run 2 is 2 x 8 minutes = 16. It might feel daunting to keep going for longer in a single interval, but this is the week where you learn how to find that 'just keep plodding' speed, where you can just keep picking up your feet for the time period regardless of how fast (or slow) you move. Do you get to the end of the 5 minute periods on W5R1 gasping for breath? If so, find a slower speed that will allow you to keep going a bit longer. Or is it a mental block? In which case, you need to find a mechanism for pushing through that. Perhaps don't force yourself to do the whole 8 minute block, but perhaps you can do a 6 minute block, or 7 minutes? You might just surprise yourself! Good luck
It’s really hard in the heat at the moment. I’m taking an extra rest day and hopefully running in the rain tomorrow.
What was it that made you stop? Has anyone told you about the toxic ten yet? It’s really, really common to find the first ten minutes of any run awful as your body adjusts and then after that, you settle into a rhythm.
Sometimes runs are just hard like that and it’s a wise decision to stop. We’ve all had them. It doesn’t make you any less of a runner and it doesn’t erase all the progress you’ve made so far. You could take a rest day or two and try again at a really cool part of the day having drunk loads and really warmed up well to give yourself the best chance of having a good run next time. Really good luck!
