As I'm an oldie with osteoporosis can I just walk or slow jog. There is no way I can run now and this forum seems to be based around running. Maybe I'm on the wrong site ?
Walking !: As I'm an oldie with osteoporosis can... - Couch to 5K
Walking !
Hello and welcome!
This forum supports the NHS Couch to 5k app, which is a programme designed to help people learn to run for 30 minutes straight.
However, it is perfectly acceptable to follow the programme without running; for example you can substitute easy walking for "brisk walking", and brisk walking for "running". If you would like to try it we would love to cheer you on! It would be wise just to check with your doctor first - if you haven't done so already of course.
NB we encourage all our C25k-ers to run at a very easy pace, so if you can manage a slow jog then you're golden!
There are a couple of communities on HealthUnlocked that focus on walking for health - to be frank they are a bit on the quiet side though!

Hello and welcome !You have had some good advice there from roseabi
And you are very welcome here .
Stick around , have a chat with your GP about it and see what they say !
Age is certainly not a barrier!
If you do decide after advice to give it a go then we will certainly be here to cheer you on 😁
As already suggested, perhaps you could 'Quick' walk the running bits and gently walk the walking bits .
As far as running is concerned, have a look at this video !
Could you do that ?
Either way , stick around 😁
Welcome to the forum.
If you can slow jog then you can do C25k.
This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5...
and includes advice on minimising impact, stretching after every run, hydration and strengthening exercises, all of which will help.
Osteoporosis can increase your risk of fracture but the impact of gentle jogging or walking is the best way to maintain your bone strength.
Enjoy your journey.
Slow jog you say?
Perfect! You've come to the right place and you're very welcome here
Hi Tinclepeg1 , not sure what others on here consider as an "oldie" but for me you'd have to be into your eighties - and even then I wouldn't dare! Enjoy your C25K experience, however you decide to go about it. 👍😀
I am 71 Cmoi but have led an active life, my main passion was owning and riding horses. This stopped when I sustained fractured vertebrae and I was advised to give it up in case of falls.Being immunosuppressed also meant I wasn't able to get out much during the lockdown for nearly two years. I'm keen to get fit again even though I walk my dogs each day. I am certainly going to up my pace now even if running isn't on the cards fir me.
Thanks for your reply x
You are by no means an 'oldie' here. Lots of us are in our 60s. I don't know about osteoperosis and running, but if you are already doing lots of brisk walking, I would have thought you could do cto5k, as long as medically you are safe to do it. It's all about keepung it slow!
As long as both feet are off the ground at some brief point in your stride, you're running, no matter what speed you're doing.
Best of luck!
Thank you all for the positive comments. I feel so much better now and will plan to start ct5k very soon. Watch this space 👍
HiTinclepeg1 . I am the same as you severe osteoporosis and have had stress fracture on back and do mostly walking but now and again do slow jogging like Instructor said. Even if you can run on grass softer than roads. Was doing a lot of running previously but decided to do more brisk walking with a wee bit jogging thrown in now and again. Couch to 5 km good place to start.
