I ran for about 18 months post-graduation but developed metatarsalgia which has taken about 9 months to heal. I'm thinking about lacing up my trainers again but am worried it might happen again. However, I have seen lots of adverts for shock-absorbing insoles and I wondered if those would help. Anyone any experience of these......?

Insoles?
Here's what the NHS says.

My own suggestion would be to see a physio to discuss this, especially if they can perform a gait analysis.
Another possibility is a referral to the podiatry department of your local hospital.
One thing to check is that the toe box of your shoes allows your forefoot to spread whilst running. You might need to wear the next size up, or a differently shaped shoe.
I have no experience of the condition but would echo the advice from nowster
This FAQ Post about buying running shoes may help to some degree healthunlocked.com/couchto5... but just buying shock absorbing insoles without any specialist input is a bit like buying running shoes without a gait analysis........... how do you know whether what you are buying is appropriate for your feet and running style?
You need to know what caused the issue in the first place ie. do you have specific physical conditions that need addressing, and how to avoid it happening again, which would most likely involve the advice of a foot specialist.
