2nd Graduation

Completed third run of week 9 of couch to 5K on Friday running 3.9 miles. I’m really pleased as I had an enforced lay-off through an ankle injury requiring 12 weeks of physio.

I’d graduated first time in December before suffering the ankle injury on Christmas Day. I thought I’d be out of commission for a few days but the pain persisted and I consulted physiotherapists. In the event, it was 12 weeks before I could start again. I started on week1 and found that despite the long break, my stamina hadn’t completely dissipated and I found weeks 1-5 quite easy.

I’ll now do week 9 three times a week for a while before deciding whether to try to increase the distance run.

Well, that's just greedy, graduating twice!! Cripes, Moriarty! 3.9 MILES!! That is pretty spectacular. Most grads don't get near the 5K mark at W9R3, and it takes them months to reach it in 30 mins.

Really? I’m surprised at that [most grads don’t get near the 5k mark at W9R3]. This time I went slower than the first time because I thought my injury was due to running too fast! I still intend to go at the rate I’m doing for awhile before looking to increase the distance.

I expected a double celebration when I graduated on Friday; graduating again and also receiving my first pension payment. But that’s paid 4 weeks in arrears so have to wait till 8th July.😊

Hi. I think the figure is between 10 and 15% for runners reaching 5k at graduation. The aim of the scheme is to get the 30 mins non-stop and then build on it. Don't forget that many new runners on here are reasonably old, sometimes fat or beyond, or haven't run since school days - which for some is quite some time ago! Our son did this whilst finishing his finals at uni and was running 5k at week 4 or 5. Then, he used to very seriously rower[4th in the UK in 2 categories] and is young. I am mid 50s [wrong side therof] and just sneaked in my 5k in 30 mins. That said, I am hill walker and cyclist... of sorts.

Enjoy your pension - when they let you have it!! I'm assuming that you are a very, very early retiree? Or I am just even more unfit than I thought!!! In my defence, I do have rather short legs, or, as a car dealer once said, 'sir has a long back'!!!

I did retire at 60 but have had to live off of savings till now at 66. I’m a short arse 5’6.5” (note the important 1/2”😂) but weigh 125lbs so not carrying a lot of weight. I have two apps that agree on the distance run: Out-run and the Apple Health app. I’m really enjoying being retired even in these strange times.

You sound pretty fit if you manage hill walking and cycling. We do some walking but not too far and certainly not vigorous. My better half has a hip issue that prevents her walking pain free at the moment.
