I’ll start with some honesty. I’m a recovering alcoholic who recently went 6 months AF which included doing c25k, and was running 5k at least twice a week.
After a recent relapse, it’s going to be about 6-7weeks since my last run when I start again, which I very much intend to do.
Any tips? 🙏

Well done on being so honest Tig40, that must be a great start. The only tips I can offer are all the same ones you had when you did C25k before - keep the running slow. Stay well hydrated, the general thought is around 2 litres of water a day. Read Iannoda Truffe’s pinned post for newbie runners because everything you need to know is there. If you were running 5k twice a week you might not need to go right back to the beginning, perhaps start and week 4 or 5 and see how you get on? And if you start to feel down or dejected about your running, know that we’re right with you egging you on! You can do this, you know you can! Good luck!
As stated in the guide to the plan, healthunlocked.com/couchto5... you lose no significant condition in the first two weeks of non running.
After that loss of condition is gradual.
All any of us can do after a lay off is to go out and see what we can comfortably manage, then build back up gently, using C25k or something similar as a guide to weekly increase.
Just don't give up. Just like going AF, if it goes wrong, just pick it up and try again. Being AF and fitter is something you can do to improve your life and your future.
I wish I could have reached my mother before it was too late. You've made a great decision, good luck. 👍🏻💫
Thanks. I’ve already worked out why I relapsed and am making positive changes there. Taking up running has been a huge boost for my mental health and I plan to stick with it!
We can't though. Only they can make that decision 🤷♀️ we can hope, and support if they try but it has to come from within.
I hope you're able to keep on the path. I can't even contemplate alcohol anymore. I've been turned right off it. Watching how it destroys people will do that 👍🏻 I don't miss it one bit. I'm happier and healthier without it.
Yeah I see that now. What happened to my friend wasn’t enough to prevent me from making the same mistakes. I had to find my own reasons for stopping. My own path.
Same for all of us. We just have to hope we find the path in time. My nemesis wasn't addiction but still took me until my thirties to begin to find a path to the light. Stay strong 💪🏻🤞🏻
