I've only gone and done it! My first run in the bag - I thank you. I'm sorry to say that I was a little naughty and started on W2 as the difference isn't that great and my legs and bod seemed happy. Yes, I will probably regret this tomorrow.

Things I have learnt today:

I can run!

Sports shorts are shorter than casual shorts, and leather car seats in February are very cold - the heating elements in them takes a long time to work!

The lowest setting on my Alpkit Quark headtorch is still quite bright.

When you breath out and are wearing a headtorch you can't see anything!

I tend to run too fast.

Running shoes are very bouncy.

Even very busy beauty spots can be deserted when its dark.

I can run!

A quick question. Is there a good guide to stretching online? People say to stretch, which I understand, but when I got back to the car I hadn't really got a clue what to do, so I made up something just to look professional in front of the assembled sheep and cattle.

Well done!!! blimey you’re brave wearing shorts at all in this weather, I go out in leggings, vest, t-shirt and a jumper. Obviously I regret this halfway through!!!

I’m sure the sheep and cattle were suitably impressed 🤣 it could be good to check out runners world - there’s lots of info about dynamic and static stretching on there and this forum is a great source of info. Good luck!!

Well done.

Do NOT ignore the rest days - as a beginner, they are essential.

And having 2 rest days (eg the weekend) in between 'weeks' is a very good thing indeed.

Rest days will be observed with the rigour of a zealous believer. They may even go into two days if needed.

Good to hear it.

It's a good habit to get into leaving 2 days between in 'week'. Once you've been running regularly for 6 months or so, then you can reassess.

Thanks for the reply.6 months seems an awfully long way away, but looking back over the past 12 it seems no time at all. How the world has changed, yet we can still get out and run.

I shall leave the two days to balance out the week, and I will see if I ever manage to get the reassessment point!

Today, my posterior feels a little tender after a decent bike ride a couple of days ago with some less padded cycling shorts, so I am pleased that I shall not be running later. It must be years since I was saddle sore.

As you say, 6 months is no time at all. If you don't me mind saying, you seem in a bit of a rush... remember that C25K is a 9 week program. It may seem easy at times, but looks can deceptive.

C25K is only the beginning of what is maybe, a long and happy running journey (I have no idea what your goals are , if any). BUT... as beginner, your body is simply not used to the repetitive impact that running brings. Did you know that it takes 1-2 years of regular running for the body to become fully adapted to it? Injuries are incredibly common in runners, especially in beginners, because an awful lot us don't what we're doing. It's also cos running is HARD.

So, take a medium to long-term view, get C25K done, in a relaxed and easy fashion, consolidate for a month or so (so 3 runs a week) and then see where you want to take your running after that.

I'm now into my 7th year of running post-C25k (started age 45) and I didnt run on consecutive days until 18 months after I'd graduated - that served me well. But since getting into marathons (well, I'm trying to) it's been 1 injury after another - 5 in the last 18 months. The body isn't strong enough for the mileage - simple. Same applies to beginners doing C25K .

Hi John, and thank you for your care and salutary warnings. Yes, maybe I am in a hurry, but I'm not in a hurry to injure myself, so I will take your words of warning very much to heart. S L O W and S T E A D Y will do. I'm not quite as young and fit as I once was, and age, wear-and-tear on the joints etc do all creep up. I really do not want to rush headlong into an enforced break.As for my goals? I'm not sure. I haven't given that too much thought beyond getting past week, day 3. The BIG jump, by the looks of it. Maybe branching -out into light trail running over the late Spring and into Summer, but only time will tell if I am up to it. We have some excellent running country on Dartmor and down at the coast, but I simply may not be able to do as much as I would like.

Thank you again, and I shall take it easy. If I need to repeat W2, I will. If I can cope after years of hill walking, backpacking and cycling, then I will listen to the old pins and move on ever-so-slowly. Fingers crossed that we all stay safe and well as Spring approaches.

Well done you! And very brave to risk the short shorts :)

A cheap fleece blanket folded on the car seat will do the trick. I have one on my car seat all winter to sit on when I am fully clothed!

Awesome! On my first run in wrapped up like a baby. Now out in shorts and t shirt!! Started enjoying being out in the cold!!

It was surprising even as a plodding newbie how quickly I warmed up. I took a warm top to pop on post 'run' just to help keep we warm.

Thanks. As always, Youtube comes riding over the hill to the rescue! I shall watch and try not to tie myself into too many knots.

Just watched it... Not sure I will tie myself up, more likely to keel over. I shall remove all breakable objects as I practise and try to avoid any insurance claims!

Use a dining chair to keep your balance! Don't do them on cold muscles, wait until after your next run or you'll be on the injury couch before you've even begun

Thanks, and wise words indeed. The only couch I want to be on is the one I get off to do this plan. I shall also mind the dog as I'm sure that she would find it most interesting. That said, I could easily distract her with some treats or milk! Skimmed for her, of course!

Haha brilliant first post, made me laugh 😆 It’s ok to start at week 2 but honestly as has been said in an earlier post whilst some of the early runs seem very easy they do help your body adjust to the added strain of running. I was used to walking miles with my girls and their horses regularly before I started C25K and thought the same about the early weeks... I am now on my third attempt and started at W1R1 this time. I did complete attempt 2 of C25K in October but still overdid it and had to rest due to painful knees and hip. My only other bit of advice is to not get too competitive with yourself! Just go out slowly and enjoy every run. There’s no need to push yourself to be faster or go further right now it’s all about going for a bit longer each week until you can comfortably run 30 mins 3 times a week. I think that was my downfall on attempt 2, I pushed myself too hard too fast! Good luck and I look forward to seeing more of your updates.
