Three weeks + down time following W4R3

Pushing myself through a mild calf muscle pain in my right leg on my last run I made a conscience effort to put more effort into my left leg. As I posted at the time I managed the run. But it took a lot of will power to finish the final 5 min run.

I woke next day and had to hobble to the bathroom. Pain in both knees. I had obviously concentrated too hard on sparing my calf that I was increasing the impact load on both legs.

At three weeks my right leg is fine (even the calf). My left knee is generally fine but still gets an ache (albeit slight) on the inner side of the joint when I go for a long fast walk. But I'm getting there.

Thanks to those who have gone before on here and recorded their experiences of getting through injuries. While I do want to get running. I've learnt I've got to wait a little longer to allow my knee to get better before I attempt to run again.

Hoping to start again next weekend with perhaps a W2 run and if thats OK a W3 then a W4. But I'll take it slower if need be.

Importantly I've learnt from those who have gone before. That while determination is always important in distance running. At 65 having not run distances in over 30 years, listening to my body telling me to stop isn't 'giving up'.

Hmmmm you'd be wise to rest that calf and let it heal properly 👍 running will always be waiting

The calf ache has well and truly gone now. What I'm stuck with now is a ache on one side of the knee of my other leg. It is easing.....but its frustrating when I want to get running again.

So the lesson everyone should take away is not to run in pain.........

When you had a tight calf, did you do any stretching?

Yes I did stretching. What I did do was to feel a little over confident in w2 and decided to increase my stride.....overlooking that I hadn't really run in about 35 years!Instead of letting it fully recover I took a couple of extra days break and continues thinking it would go like the very minor inner thigh ache I had in week one.

It's often because you've been putting more weight on your non injured leg to compensate.

Not what you're looking for?
