The International Space Station... Astronauts, cosmonauts, taikonauts etc. All in space.

But that's LEO - Low Earth Orbit. And they are 100 miles above us.

Amazing then to think that as you stand there waiting for your Garmin or Polar to find a GPS signal, it's 'pinging' an object about the size of a fridge or smaller, in space, orbiting around a fixed position on the Earth, at a distance of 36,000 miles away.

Yes, 36,000 miles. And it can pin-point your distance on our planet to an accuracy of about 10 metres at any one point in time. From 36,000 miles away.

That's Global Positioning System technology for you.
