Running when is cold

Truth is I'm a slob, and winter is not a time for me to feel like leaving the house.

What are your experiences while running during winter time?

Easier than running in the heat. You won’t even find me wearing a base layer until it’s under 4 degrees.

The prospect of leaving a cozy house is never enticing. However, that lovely feeling of having completed a run is amplified when you've still gone and didn't want to. Besides which, it's never as bad as it looks from inside the double-glazing and can even be a real pleasure once you're out and wet and realise it doesn't matter. Give it a go.

It’s definitely easier than running in the summer for me. I actually love running in the winter, especially on a crisp cold morning. The air is cleaner, it’s easier to breathe. If you street run, Halloween and Christmas see people putting up decorations so there’s different things to look at.

I don’t mind the rain either. The first year I ran I bought some long sleeved running tops, but soon found I got too hot in them, which leads me to:

Wear at least one layer less than you think you should as otherwise you will get HOT 🥵. But do remember gloves if it’s a cold day.

If you aren’t running from your house, then dry shoes and socks in the car for after your run are a must.

If you wear glasses a baseball type cap is good to keep the rain off and stops you being dazzled by low sunshine.

Make sure you are visible. Winter is not the time for wearing blue/grey/black running kit (red also can disappear in low light levels). Go out and buy some neon running tops/hi viz waistcoat, or at least some bright colours - they don’t have to cost a lot.

Rain is good as far as I'm concerned, and cold is ok too as it can keep you cool. I will make an exception for ice/snow as that stuff is dangerous.

Snow is fine. Ice is tricky.

Ice and frost are sneaky beggars.

Until you try it, you cannot imagine the euphoria of completing a run on a cold and clear morning, when the world is blanketed in silence and the countryside seems to be sleeping under a layer of frost :)

Sounds amazing. I’m looking forward to this

Love running in the cold and wet. It’s much nicer to breathe cool air in and no humidity means I sweat a lot less.

Prefer the Winter runs, The forest looks great with the mist and frost on the ground and i find it easier to breath when its cold, Cold air carries more Oxygen

I used to be an "outdoors in summer only" kind of person, and I really didn't think I'd like running in winter. But when it came to it, some of my best runs have been when it's frosty or in the snow. The key is to layer up, and I find jackets which zip all the way best as I invariably end up taking them off and tying them round my waist. I also have running gloves. My hands get and stay very cold, so you'll often see me running along in a vest and capris, but still wearing my gloves.

I also love seeing how the seasons change the surroundings.

Running in the cold and rain is not so fun especially as I am a glasses wearer. But running outside still, for me, trumps running inside on a treadmill.

What sort of gloves do you wear ? My hands get cold and I’m not sure what sort of gloves to run in.

Running gloves - most running/sports outlets have them :-)

Thanks I haven’t looked for running gloves yet and wasn’t sure if it was ordinary thin sort or to go in a sports shop and ask lol didn’t want to look like an idiot 😂

I can’t wear gloves no matter how cold it is. My hands get too hot and sweaty even with running gloves.

Me too! I just tuck my hands up my sleeves for the first 5 minutes if it’s very cold- cycling jackets have extra long sleeves - perfect running jackets! 😄

I can’t bear seams so have yet to find proper running gloves that wouldn’t drive me barmy. I buy the cheap ‘magic’ gloves that will still swipe my phone, that way I don’t care if I lose one when I’m finally warm enough to take them off.

Karrimor running gloves - available cheaply from Sports Direct. Thin, not too warm. They do me fine on cold days, but sometimes I still need to take them off after about 3 or 4K, so you need a pocket or bag to stuff them in. (I use a stretchy running belt with a long 2-zip pocket for my keys, etc.)

To be honest, I - like most others who commented- prefer winter runs. It's much nicer when it's not too hot and the best thing: no pollen!! For us hay-fever sufferers, it makes a real difference and I feel that I can finally breathe. I go out in the evening so naturally, in winter it's dark. I quite like it and as I run in a park where there are always other runners around, I feel quite safe. When there is not much to see around, I really get into my head and I sometimes end up solving problems I couldn't find a solution for. It is hard to get off the sofa when it's cold and dark but I usually change into my running gear straight away when I get in after work. Once the bum hits the sofa, I have lost 😜. I get hot quite quickly when I run, so my go-to clothes are a winter top (with a zip on the front which I quite quickly open when I start warming up). On a really really cold day (quite rare) I wear a t-shirt (fluorescent for vision) on top of the long top. I often start with gloves on but soon take them off. I have Karrimor running gloves, they are quite thin but take the edge off at the start of a run.
